Real Mi-24 Hind
I took my 5 year old son to a the Russell Military Museum in Zion, IL today. Despite living in the Chicago area for over 4 decades, I have never been to this museum. It is a private collection of tanks, self propelled guns, personnel carriers, support vehicles, fighter jets, helicopters, and more. He also happens to have a real Mi-24 Hind. No shit. It doesn't fly, but is still cool to look at.

Very nice pics Xpen. You are raising him right!

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. I have targeted that museum to visit it next time I'm in Chicago. Maybe they will let me sit in the cockpit.
Re: Real Mi-24 Hind
I couldn't see inside either cockpit of the Hind, so not sure of the condition. But I imagine if you were to offer a decent cash bribe, you could make it happen.
Re: Real Mi-24 Hind
I have taken the liberty to email the guy to see if he would be willing to let you, me, and Bones take turns sitting in the Hind for a little dough sometime. I will let you know what I find out. I am betting we could make it happen.

Very cool pictures....
I really hope he says yes! That would be a pretty neat experience.

I have not heard back. I am not giving up so easily, however.

I never knew about this museum either! And I lived here longer than you! I know there is one by Bristol Renaissance Faire, just over the border. You could see it off the west side of 94, but I've never been there too. But when I pas, I see an old beat up F-15 sitting there and a few tanks. Thanks for contacting the owner. Ask him if I can spray paint "WOLVERINES!" on the side of the HIND.
Did you notice how the tail section of the HIND is still made out of fabric like they used to in WWI? Gotta love state-supported production.

Re: Real Mi-24 Hind
Yes, the Bristol Renaissance Faire used to be called King Richard's Faire, which my brother and I still refer to as "King Dick's Faire". I have not been in years but have been several times, both before and after the name change.
I did not notice the fabric covering on Hind. It was hot out, and truth be told, we did not have a lot of time. I like the Red Dawn reference.

Yes, I remember when it was King Richard's Faire also!
I have been both before and after the change, altbough the last time was maybe in 2019. People cosplay Renaissance folk there obviously, but one time I went dressed as Ash from "Army of Darkness" (Evil Dead 3) since he did go back in time to that time period of sorts. Had the full shotgun and chainsaw hand thing haha. It's great how into character they get. I went to approach the Queen for a photo and her bodyguards all drew their sword upon my approach and held me at bay. I said with my hands up, "I just want to talk to the queen" and they sized me up then slowly sheathed their swords and let me pass, haha.
Maybe I'm a purist but the recent influx of people dressed as pirates to go the RenFaire really bug me. I mean, Jack Sparrow cosplayers. THERE WERE NO 1700 ERA PIRATES IN THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD!!!! It's a virus that is spreading there and I can't stand it.
Oh, I did see a group of people walking around with black tactical gear and I was like, what? And then I saw they had Stargate Sg.1 patches on and I was like, OK, I can see that.
haha.

LOL Great post bones. It's been almost 20 years since I've been to a Renaissance festival. The kind of crowds that get involved with those events are "unique" to say the least. ;-)

Speaking of MI-24's, isn't that also what Rambo shoots down in Rambo II with an RPG at the end of that hilariously cheesy action scene where he's being chased by the Hind?

Re: Real Mi-24 Hind
That's awesome, Bones! I love Evil Dead (Ash / Bruce Campbell). This summer I introduced my 14 year daughter to both Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. She enjoyed them.
My brother and I would dress up for the Faire... we'd kind of go as Musketeers. I have a real Spanish Rapier that I'd bring, and my brother would have one of his foils or sabers. He's a fencer, and was the state champion saber fencer for the Stake of Kentucky for 1986. He started a fencing club in Seattle maybe a decade ago that still goes on today, and both his sons are now fencers.
