Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
So whenI heard they were making a 5th Indy movie, I still had the bad taste of the 4th one in my mouth so I was anxious about it.
Then I heard it was submitted to Cannes and the reception/result was ho-hum.
Then I heard after test screenings that it was getting no great reviews, something like 6 out of 10.
So I was nervous but didn't want anyone to influence my viewing it.
I saw it on July 1, which if you are a die hard Indy fan, you know that is his 124th birthday. So I thought it was fitting to see it then.
I really loved it! And a day or two later when the experience sunk in I realized I loved it even more!
After watching it I read reviews of what people thought, and I have to say, most of them just didn't get it. No wonder they gave it bad reviews.
Well, anyway, i would recommend you check it out.

Re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
I have not seen it but from the financial side it's been a total disaster for Disney. I just can't comprehend that Disney spent 300 million to make this film.
Anyway, I'll catch INDY 5 on streaming later this year. For me the Indy franchise ended in 1989.

I think financially speaking it isn't doing well V the $300M for the same reason why "West Side Story" didn't do well.
People are just not interested in that sort of thing anymore. In general, they'd rather just dumb out on fast cars and slashers and CGI movies instead.

Yup plus it shows yet again that all franchises have their "time in the sun" and then decline after that if they wear out their welcome. In the case of Indy specifically, I think Crystal Skull soured a lot of people on the franchise and they never bothered to return for Dial of Destiny.

I like this synopsis. I heard negative reviews as well but when it all comes down to it, the Indy movies are well done and enjoyable, even the last one with Shia. I'm not a big a fan as the Star Wars series (any SW film is good in my opinion) but I can see how any Indy fan would enjoy this film. I hope to see it but not in a rush. I'm trying to finish the Oppenheimer biography in time for the film's release.

Chris Nolan is a fantastic film-maker and I'm sure this will be a very good movie but I will be totally amazed if this movie actually makes a profit. Let's be honest here, this isn't exactly mainstream multi-plex audience subject matter here. I would even go so far as saying that most Americans don't even know who Oppenheimer was.

Re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
its definitely not geared towards the younger generation from what I see of the previews. But, given that Russia moved tac nukes into Belarus, something timely I think.
BTW, i reinstalled Arma 3 and saw the simhq info so I can hopefully be ready for Monday night. There seem to be a TON of mods. Are all those required for the monday night ops? (shout out to Bones who for years kept telling me to try Arma and I have more hours in it than he does now LOL).

Yes, there are a lot of mods and paid DLC's that we use but the Steam workshop makes it SO much easier to install and manage. The initial set up probably took me about 20 minutes or so to complete but once that's done it pretty much runs on auto-pilot. Whenever there are updates for the mods we use they are automatically downloaded and installed by the Steam workshop.

OK thanks. I will download and install them. I've done this before. I just want to make sure that ALL of them in that big list are required.

Re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Having just seen it I will agree it was very enjoyable. Once again the de-aging was a little jarring at times, it worked well for "static" shots but action shots showed its limitations. I mean it was no Tron Legacy but it was not as good as RDJ in Capt America Civil War let alone Michael Douglas in Avengers Endgame.
Beyond that, the story I think was better. The script for Crystal Skull left a lot to be desired, although the characters of Mutt, Marion, Mac, and Ox were very well done. Spalko...eh.
I would say Mads Mikkelsen was an antagonist that worked just as well as the ones in Raiders and Last Crusade. He was intelligent, he was egotistical but not over-the-top, and he was understandable. I had not heard Antonio Banderas was going to be in the film! He had a small but memorable part.
Not only was Indy 5 better than Indy 4 overall, I think there are several aspects that put it ahead of Temple of Doom as well. Not the score, sorry John Williams but Temple of Doom's score was awesome and Indy 5's best parts were the reused parts from Raiders and Last Crusade. Beyond that, though, the villain, the settings, the stakes, and the McGuffin of Temple of Doom weren't up to snuff. What makes it worth watching are the action set pieces in Shanghai, the plane/raft/mountain, the Temple of Doom itself, the mines/mine car chase and the bridge scenes. Indy 5's set pieces are a bit smaller until the climax of the film,
However, seeing all these other things in Indy 5 like an He-111 and the Greek mythology put it just behind Raiders and Last Crusade for me. There were a handful of callbacks to the previous films but the film doesn't rely on them at all, and if Sallah singing "A British Tar" again doesn't remind you of his final scene in Raiders that's fine, it's not important.

I just saw this post but I'm not going to read it until after I see it. I plan on seeing it tomorrow with my youngest. Looking forward to it regardless of what anyone else says.
Re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Saw it yesterday. My thoughts:
Its good. I liked the adventure. Yes the cgi of his face was a bit wonky at times but it was a good story. However, I felt the chase scenes were a bit lengthy and the treasure hunting/puzzles were a bit rushed. At least with national treasure the focus was on solving the puzzle when it was happening, not just being a distraction for something else. I have to say original Raiders and the last crusade were better. I put this as a tie with crystal skull. Madds was a great bad guy. I like him in anything. My son thought the going back in time to the Syracuse siege was a big strange but he's a different generation.
Overall I'm glad I saw it, I enjoyed it ok and I wouldn't need to see it again. A good conclusion to the series and I surmised who would show up at the end. I did love seeing the He111.
The original Raiders was the first VHS movie we owned. So, as a 10 yr old I watched it over and over again. I may have seen it more times than SW a New Hope hahaha.

Re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
IMHO he's one of those underrated actors who EXCELS in every role he's done regardless of how good or bad the movie may be. I first noticed him in Casino Royale and I've been a fan of his ever since. He simply oozes tons of on-screen gravitas.

Re: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Traditionally, the Paramount logo at the beginning morphed into something in the film.
Raiders: a mountain in Peru
Temple of Doom: A mountain on the Club Obi-Wan cymbal
Last Crusade: A mountain in Utah
Crystal Skull: A prairie dog hill
Dial of Destiny: forgotten and replaced with Disney credit
Really, Disney? Really?

Stuff like that happens when neither Lucas or Spielberg are involved.

Yeah that was probably more of a Spielberg directorial thing.
