New Tactical FPS--The REAL GR2!

Post by Jedi Master »

Ok, we all know by now that GR2 is bound to be a disappointment. The consolized version sold FAR better than the PC one did, so that's where they're going. Of course, the fact that it was a consolized PC game, not a console game ported to PC seems to have escaped them, but anyway...

In better news, check this out:

http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/close-combat-f ... ?fromint=1

It's called Close Combat: First to Fight. The name might make you think of the RTS previously released in the 90's, but this is apparently a TFPS so "realistic" some gamers might not find it fun. (??)

This game is also going to be on the Xbox (I don't know why we would expect otherwise nowadays :( ) but it's looking to be more like GR2 than GR2 will be.

Have to say, Jedi, this does sound very appealing to me! Proper movement in a sabre team being a direct influence on how well you do and the phsycological theme is very interesting to say the least - it brings into play many an adage / tru-ism such as "firepower wins the firefight" and so on. And keeping the enemy's head down by concentrated firepower on his position, which in turn allows your side to manouever a little more freely and take up advantageous positions to apply the final thrust and take the position more easily.
Maybe someone will make a mod for an SAS sabre team - you know a decent one like anti-terror or desert warfare, but definitely not one with the troopers wearing regimental berets - that was WW II stuff, they don't run around wearing them in an operational environment these days!!
It is not the technique that wins a fight, but the more furious mind - Kodiak WOF

I found some info on the Developers Site. They are actually making 2 games, Close Combat: Red Phoenix (3d Shooter based on the novel, which is a good book BTW) and Close Combat: First to Fight. (Both use the same 3D engine) My only concern is that you will only be able to play up to 4 people MP coop (If it even supports MP coop), unless there is more than 1 Fireteam per group, then more than 4 players could be possible. We'll have to wait and see as more details become available.

For more than a year now, Atomic and Destineer have been jointly working on projects for the US Marine Corps that we will also be releasing commercially. Each company has its own strengths, so it made sense for us to divide up the work, with Atomic taking the Real-Time Strategy game and Destineer taking the First-Person Shooter. The games will be titled Close Combat: Red Phoenix and Close Combat: First to Fight, respectively. Clearly, the addition of the first-person shooter, Close Combat: First to Fight, greatly expands what we’ll be able to offer with the Close Combat series. Both games will use the next-generation Destineer 3D engine, which vividly brings the action and the environments to life. Both games are being designed with the aid and support of the United States Marine Corps, and both games will be available to the public, with Close Combat: First to Fight coming out late in 2004 and Close Combat: Red Phoenix being released early in 2005.

Close Combat: Red Phoenix is loosely based on Larry Bond’s bestselling novel, Red Phoenix, which chronicles an invasion of South Korea by its neighbor to the north. In addition to being timely, the subject marks the first time Close Combat has represented a modern-day conflict with “right now” combatants. The game puts you in command of a reinforced USMC rifle platoon, or a reinforced ROK platoon, or even a DPRK platoon-sized element fighting across maps that dwarf previous Close Combat battlegrounds. New from the ground up, Close Combat: Red Phoenix represents the beginning of a new series of Close Combat strategy games.

Close Combat: First to Fight takes us to the deadliest battlefield on Earth: the urban jungle. Set in bullet-riddled cities and suburbs, Close Combat: First to Fight puts you in charge of a 4-man USMC fire team. You are not the Lone Ranger, tasked to take out all the bad guys on your own. You are a leader of men. You have a covenant with them as they do with you and you’ll only survive by respecting that covenant. As with Close Combat: Red Phoenix, Close Combat: First to Fight represents the first in a new series of Close Combat games.

We are all very excited about these projects and we’re ecstatic that can once more bring you innovative and fun games that represent combat in realistic and respectful ways. We will be adding to this site over the coming months, giving you more details about the games, including screenshots and probably a couple of demos. Feel free to check out the official press release at the www.closecombat.com website.

Well, in that respect , perhaps we are looking at a game which for the majority may at least be fairly stable and compatible online and such? :?
What do you think?
