I don't care about the footy result-not a fan of the sport at all. :)

You have to say "Brit" because what else would you call someone from England?

Eng???

Scotland = Scot, ok.
Wales = Welsh, ok.
Ireland = Ire ??? :?:
Isle of Man = Isleman? Islemanian? Gilligan?

You could say you are from Great Britain, therefore you should be called a Great Brit! ;)

Please don't make me laugh! Last time Britain was great was . . . . I dunno really, was it ever great? 8O

Anyway, back to the subject at hand, we Scots tend to loosely use the phrase sassenach - although not entirely a correct useage, we've generalised it over the years to simply mean English bastard, I mean er. . .those of English descent, our arrogant brothers in the south. :wink:

Jedi Master it's real easy:

Scotland: Scot/Scottish
Wales: Welsh
Ireland: Irish
England: English

Hammer don't take any offence here, there is none intended by myself or Kodiak as we are just larking around but as said earlier Sassenach is the term most Scots use to describe the English when they are taking the piss and there is a long held rivalry between the Scots and English but it is just that, for example the rivalry you get between 2 different footbal teams West Ham and Arsenal for example or in Scotland Rangers and Celtic.

And anyway we take the piss out of each other here all the time it's the WOF members favourite hobby and it's all to be taken as light harted piss taking. Just take a look at some of the older posts and you will see what i mean.

Sorry, ONE syllable is easy.

Use two and you've blown the whole deal.

After all, many BRITS use the term "Yank" for Americans, since one syllable is easier than 3, when in fact only a tiny portion of the population could be described that way. Call a Texan a "Yank" and he'll likely "Yank" your head off, for example. :)

Why? Who, technically, are the Yanks?

Well, if my memory serves me right it could be described as "those in the North East" somewhat precisely - but I'm sure there'll be a river there somewhere that makes the "official" divide. :roll:

I believe and please correct me if i get this wrong but does this not date back to the American Civil War when you had the Yankees in the north and the Confederates in the south.

This little difference still obviously has a big difference to some Americans today hence why a Texan will Yank your head off if you call him a yank.

Same Feeling a Scot gets when he is called an English man.

Actually, I've noticed southerners never use the term "yank", always the full "yankee." However, they usually use it as an adjective and not a noun.

Eg "that Yankee loser" or "crazy Yankee bastard".
