How good is a Radeon 9550?
I have a friend who's rebuilding his PC, and the 9550 sounded like his best option. Opinions?

Can't say I know anythiong about them, as you know I am an nVidia fan myself. But if I see anything whilst browsing I'l;l put it on the thread here for ya!
Say what happened to everyone last night, me and Gator braced it out ourselves in the end, then Steel showed later.

ATI Radeon 9550?? no such thing from what i know of but there is an Nvidia 9550!! Maybee this is what you are talking about.
And i'd still take the 9800 Pro or 9800XT over that card any day simply due to the fact that these are now cards from the last generation not the new generationand ATI ruled the roost then and a Pro or XT is a better card than the 9550 when it comes to quality and speed.
ATI had the right chip engineering for these generation of cards but Nvidia didn't and took the wrong road in the design department and then realised there mistake and had to compensate by writing some really damm good drivers to get the card to do the DX 9 stuff correctly.
General rule old generation ATI Radeon is the way to go! New generation take the Nvidia road 6800 and so on(they seem to have got off to a good start with the new generation having more DX9.0c capabilityies than ATI do).
Hope this helps
P.S. Kodiak double Post your round i think!!!!

This guy's only got a limited budget. I did recommend the 9800 Pro, but he doesn't want to spend that much! Surprising, given the rest of his soon-to-be-PC specs.

Ok found the Radeon 9550 and i'd tell your mate not to bother this is a real budget card £45 and it will not play todays games at great FPS or be able to run them at high settings.
Ok i know that some people do have limited budgets and that £130 for a 9800 Pro is out of some peoples reach but i really think that anything less than this will be a waste of cash as even a 9800 pro will only have a life span of 2 years before it's really struggling with the games that are out by then, so anything less than that will already be struggling with today's games, in fact the 9800 Pro struggles with Lomac on high settings no matter what processor you have.
My advice to you friend will be to save up to get £130 for the 9800 Pro or at the very least go for the 9600XT at £75. This will at least give him a couple of years gaming out of it before he even needs to think about upgrading it.
Here is a link to the 9600XT at Ebuyer.com, I have bought most of my PC components from here good prices, good delivery and he can have a look at other stuff he might want to get as well but the 9550 i'd leave out of his wish list as he will be needing to upgrade it before next spring!.

This advice is given with the understanding that your mate will be wanting to play a lot of Games on his new PC but if he is not a big gamer and is wanting it for wordprocessing and homework (assuming he is at school still) then ignore the above.
Hope he gets it all up and running soon.

In terms of the amount of games he plays, he's just like me. In fact, I have about half a dozen of his games that he's lent me, simply because they won't run! Half-life is about the only game he has that runs at 'acceptable' speeds!Nemisis wrote:but if he is not a big gamer

I am going to enhance my system by upgrading the CPU and RAM to 3200XP & 1GByte DDR400 in the short term, and I'll follow it a bit later by purchasing a decent graphics card. From what I've heard the GT isn't that much of a benefit from the basic model, and the guy writing the review said if you could afford to buy the Pro model, but at GBP 400,- I'll wait a while to pick one up - say Xmas?!
