Foreign Films

Post by PanzerMeyer »

Any of you guys like watching foreign films?

My favorite films are from Akira Kurosawa (Ran, Kagemusha, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood) and Sergei Eisenstein (Ivan the Terrible, Battleship Potemkin and Alexander Nevsky).

Well, nothing quite so elaborate. Although, I DO enjoy the Oriental fantasy martial arts films somewhat (but not just for the fighting, it's the whole cultural involvement in the storyline that fascinates me.) - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon springs to mind, Hero is a more recent epic of a similar nature, hell - I even sat down to watch Mulan with the kids and was entertained. Have never heard of Akira Kurosawa, Ran, Kagemusha, Seven Samurai - maybe you could give me a run-down on them?
Of course I enjoy the usual stuff from Bruce Lee and such, & not to forget Shogun. The Last Samurai was very much a Hollywood thing but it wasn't too bad given the storyline. As I was growing-up 'Water Margin' was the program to be watching that everyone talked about, and I guess there was somewhat of an influence from that. I really used to get annoyed at the audio dubbing, the early attempts were pathetic and a real put-off to enjoying the whole film.

Kodiak, there's a new one in the same vein as CTHD and Hero ... it's called House of Flying Daggers. It's just out over here and we're looking to see it soon. Looks great. Stars Zhang Ziyi and Andy Lau.

Panzer, I'm down wit all dat! Seen most of what's on your list. I'm into just about anything on film. I like Independent films too. You might like a movie called Six String Samurai. An interesting commentary on the cold war blended nicely with Sword slashing, Kung-Fu mayhem.

Well, I'll wait for your review, before asking Kerrie to get it on DVD at an appropriate time. Thx

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check and see if Netflix has it.
