Mercs is Out! - Don't bother :(
Gosh, where do I start?
Of the 10 new 'Mechs, 2 are lights (Lag Bots) rest are ASSaults. No Meds or Heavies. Can you say "Zoners in Love"?
No Jewel Case, 2 disks in colorful designer chipboard.
Manual is skimpy, to the uninitiated there isn't enough info. If they were going to cheapen it down, they shoulda done it right like Activision did with GBL. (.pdf file on disk)
Opening Cimema? ALL GAME CAPS!!!!!
Seems through the entire MW and MC legacy there was a trend to better the last movie. Till M$ took over. They are so damn cheap, there isn't even an live actors like BK had.
Game play? So what! It seems that it would have too much to overcome with it's lame delivery. I would expect a helluva lot more outta the game itself to justify the $50 I just wasted. OK, so I didn't waste $50. But if M$ would give me back $30 of that, I'd call it even.
Multiplayer? Given as how M$ is directly responsible for the degradation of the MW community as a whole(OK they had some ground breaking help from MicroProse), this game will only encourage the Lame Ass legging mentality that has made the Zone what it is today. I had thought to blame TJ Wagner and his crowd, but the game in and of itself rocks. It's how the game and the way it is played that has really hurt us.
Trueborns Unite! Save your $50, enjoy what you can of MW & BK while you can. When Wal-Mart has it for $19.99, it might be worth it.
<S> Fethr
P.S. But I'm not bitter, NOT!
I'll post more after I actually play it this weekend.

Ok, i went out and got Mercs over my lunchbreak. I'll load it up and give a report when I get home. I have been monitoring W!O chat and DropShipCommand forums. From what I hear the weapons balence seems to be right on and they removed the C-Dilla/SafeCast copy protection crap that gave everyone problems when the Mech Packs came out. The No Respawn game type is gone and the Dev Team on the DSC Forums is getting hammered over it. Die Kerensky from NBT4 spanked one of the DEV's (TJ Ranger aka PAINGOD) over the issue so I'd expect some sort of patch forthwith. They did include a autopatching thing so now more cantankerous patching etc.
One thing that has/is being railed about is this. You can turn off the fog settings in your vid-card display script to efectivly dis-able any and all fog settings even if the server has pea-soup fog set in that game, you see all the way out to the limit of 1000 meters. Yes it sucks, but it's out in the open. I'll test this tonight.
See ya;ll when I get home from work.

Somebody has to make a stand on the old Quality over quantity issue.
If your typical Zoner ain't gonna do it, that just leaves the real Mechwarriors. If we just bend over and take it this time. They'll be even less inclined to use lubrication with the next "Fine Microsft Product" they release.
Fethr
No, I haven't even installed it yet.

it sounds like there are alot of issues and not just with the new mercs game.
i dont have mercs yet, got to wait till the 15th and i will probably buy it simply becuse its mechy. and now, i got to see what all the hubbub is about so i can cast my own opinion on it hehe.
about the general mw4 games overall. i am kinda split. i do enjoy the game as it stands. even with the problems involved. but then again, there are things that sorta offend me about it as well.
the most important factor that i can think of reflects my mentality probably revolves around mw2, the game that i was weened on. mainly netmech 95 being that was what i played the most of. keep in mind that during my WHOLE mw2 stint as a pilot. i mainly played in just one league. the mech 3 league. now of course we had pilots and units with all sorts of mentality as to how the game was played. but from my stand point during that time it seemed to me that it was a good thing to try to avoid legging or anything that gave you a very large advatage over your oponent. yea i know, this sounds strange if you are playing a strict war simulation. however to those of us who seemed to be drawn to this mental state, it made the game much more enjoyable to play. the main reasons is that when you face an oponent the there were few factors that dictated the outcome. one being your mech selection. and the other is PURE skill. the pilot skill involved realy surounded the ability to guage lag shots and leading the mechs involved. the other guage was the ability to move within this small lag window in such a way as to confuse your oponent. yea this sounds like bug manipulation in a way, but realy it wasnt, thats becuse it was in the game, and it was consistant threwout the game as well. in fact part of the whole fun of mw2 was the lag and lag shooting in my opinion. then mw3 came out, a game i REALY enjoyed. but for a few things like if you blow a leg the whole mech dies and some heat things if i recall right. but other then that it was a good game IMO. but all of a sudden something started happening. BOATS! and alot of em. mean nasty bugers that you wouldnt stand a chance against. there were times i admit that i was inclined to use boats. generaly if i KNEW the other team was going to as well. but i noticed with that game the idea and mentality to face your oponent with pure skill was being outdated by a new one, the mentality to the more firepower the better, and take advantage of anything you can to win.
well with mw4 there now seems to be alot of things that upset me about the game, even though i DO enjoy it. one is the lag mechs. yea they ARE lag mechs. the game simply does NOT represent these mechs locations accuratly enough to be real. now in mw2 it was the same, but it did that to any mech you piloted. not just a select few. you should not have to aim you shots so they land 2 mechs lead in FRONT of your target! its rediculous. i very rarely pilot these mechs simply becuse of this reason. i feel that since it is known that these mechs are buggy like this it seems i would be cheating myself and my foe a good match becuse i was taking an unfair advantage of a flaw. i do pilot one now and then, generaly in responce to other lagger mechs and i simply get fed up lol.
when the game first came out i had my nasty LRM20 vulture. it as a killer and chained just right it was realy hard to beat. but do to the fact that i was not even allowing my foe to target me, let alone get a shot off to see how skillfull they may be was an unfair advantage yet again. so that mech went into the storage bay. and is used seldom now. the same thing happened to the 6 ERmadcat and the 7 ER novacat. so now i seldom chain fire. and i seldom use all one weapon boats. almost every mech config i have used in the last year has some sort of mix. yes, some of these mechs are very deadly, but i allow my mechs weapons to recharge as they will and that is the closest i get to chain fire now days. now when i face a foe. even if im at a disadvantage due to my mentality about the game, i feel proud of my skills in defeating them, if i lose, then i try to find some tactic or something that will allow me to destroy them rather then giving in to the 'must win' mentality and takeing a more deadly mech. or one that i can manipulate ot take away the skill factor of the other player.
i guess in the long run, my enjoyment of this game is pitting my skill against my foes skill in a mech and they config they use. i try to desighn mechs that allow they to use their skill against me, rather then to take their skill away to overcome them. so when i face someone its general my aim vs your aim, my timeing vs your timeing, my weapons setup vs your weapons setup, my manouvers vs your manouvers. on a fair basis.
for me this seems right. and please forgive me feather if i am putting words in your mouth. i feel this is the stand point where ppl like feather and i come from. and why when we see such things that go against it it puts our feathers in a ruffle.
sorry for the awfully long post, ( its a curse! i cant stop it !!) i just thought a good basis for understanding might be called for as to why some ppl have a problem with 'zoners'. that term came about becuse the mentality of win at all costs was first seen from ppl on the zone and zone match, but when we played the game on kali in our group the mentality of pitting yourself fairly against your foe predominated.
ok enough babbling..... uhg :::grabs fingers pulls away from keyboard, takes mouse and clicks submit::::

Ok here is my usual short and sweet. I like it, the graphics are better and the sound is great. I think the mechs are more responsive and the weapons are just plain better. Overall i think it is a good addition to MW.

I think i might have missed something with Black Knight...
In MW4, you have the opening video with real actors and what looks like real mechs (my kid absolutely LOVES that video btw ) but in BK, all i get is a zoom in to a planet with a quick tune in the background, then it goes to the menu. Am i missing something?

I installed mercs and when I try to run it an error message comes up that says "Cannot open or cannot run DirectSound dII" I don't know wtf is up with it. I need to upgrade my CPU and probably the damned mother board and am Extremely P.O.ed I think I will stop typing before I make a gaint size ass out of myself.
"Live free, die well."
Does Mercs include any kind of intro or cut scene movies? I sure hope they aren't of the same vein as all the magazine adds- glofying all the violence and panic. It really craps on the history of so many mercenary units. Maybe they are appealing to the Mountain Dew and skateboard crowd. Maybe they should have made a "MechWarrior ExXtrEmE" or set the game in Solaris where that mentality might fit. There I go again...gripe..gripe..gripe

ok i been playing mercs for a bit here... there are a few things i like and a few i dont realy care for. the graphics are better if your into the comic type look. i realy get a feeling im playing a comic book. but i guess the downfall of glide and 3dfx is to blame more then anything in that respect. oh well. what can they do about it... the AI bots in the game are alot more responsive then before. and a whole long more underhanded it seems to me, however it does seem they do target a bit more then just your legs now so thats a plus. in alot of ways i agree with feather about some of the things dealing with the weapons. i myself prefer heavier mechs so the heavy mech fests dont bother me. however some of the weapons i see in the game so far are going to be a nightmare to make open games enjoyable... its bad enough with the UAC 2 diashis in BK now with the rotory cannon its liable to be bad. the AC's in mw2 were similar but they didnt send to rock a mech so you were at least able to get a shot off back at your foe. BUT we all know how i feel about taken away my opositions ability to fight back.....
i havnt tried any online games yet. (afraid to for the most part) but will let you know what i find once i suck it up and do so.
i realy hope threw some miricle that the multi play turns out balanced and enjoyable at least to the point that i have found the single play to be at this point.

Just got it and tried it out. I have to agree with earlier observations that it is more 'arcade' style, the bright colours are a little off-putting although there is more detail. Some nice little touches here and there including the sounds, especially the voice which now seems more machine-like, sounds more appropriate to the game.
I like it tho. Only problem is i cant seem to tear myself away from my Thanny. There must be upwards of 50 mechs available now including the packs, but imho the Thanny is still king

Sounds like it's more fun then MW4 to me so far. I liked the female computer voice that came with MW2 , she was always my favorite.
I should be playing the single player in a few weeks , then it's on to trying out hosting one with the cable we recently got. See ya'll dirt side

Time to reformulate my opinion i think...
Maps are almost claustrophobic.
I thought 'woohoo' when i heard erll had been downgraded. Then i quickly realised that rac had taken its place. Is there a mech in zonematch that DOESNT have it?
Seems to me they have pandered to the masses (please dont say i told you so etc....we all know what a f*ck M$ is) and turned the game in to a shoot fest.
I'm with you Fethr. If you havent got it...DONT GET IT! And if you want it but havent got it....Get a pirate, a download, anything!!!
Added to that, we cant transfer maps, configs, etc, etc. So now we have to wait ages to people start pulling custom maps etc out.
MW4 when i first seen it was like poetry in motion. I was mesmerised by it almost. Had the game been like it is right now, i would have had a quick shot and, like almost every other game ive played online, said 'No Thanks' to it.
Just my opinion tho.

I havent played most multy maps just the solaris maps(wich are small like Glas said) and the RAC is rather anoying. There are ways to compansate for the RAC...yesterday BH was is a Fafnir with RAC's and manage to give him a blackeyel ots of times ...i had the advanced gyro thyngy working so it didnt rock my mech much(i was in a Victor, Hgauss 3 LL) and in another game i was in Ryoken with 2UAC10 and 2ERL and came first in kills and points and everybody was using RAC's. I have noticed that people that use them tend to stay put and spray the area with them so they make easy tagets. Another thing i have notice is that jumping and siniping doent work that well now(Glas got a taste of that yesterday)...everytime you jump everybody with RAC will kick the crap out of you(i belive it is intentional to counter jump/sniping). Still if your mechy is somewhat fast and you can get close and a littlebit behind them you can kill them...like i said they tend to become fixed gun turrets and rotate.
I do wish we could get BK and MW4 maps into the game and that the game wouldnt feel so arcade(feels like playing xbox or PS2 sometimes)
