WitchStar,
Please do visit the site. ELH has been around a long time as online units go. We ARE a play for fun unit, as that is our main goal. Given that, we do all of the things you mention, to one degree or another (usually on the lesser side). We have great discussions on tactics in our forums, folks post ideas about plans for upcoming battles, we try to have as much practice as possible ahead of time to try those tactics out. We generally have comms discipline, and this is starting to tighten up a bit as things became unmanageable for a while.
We have folks that do play just for fun, but they are cognizant of others desire to excel. Again, while we are a play for fun unit that does not mean we are not competitive. I think our folks are very competitive, and on top of that we have some of the best pilots and drop leaders in MW4. We have quite a reputation as an honorable and fair and tough unit. We have worked hard to get there, and work hard to stay there. I am personally humbled that these folks allow me to serve as one of their leaders.
We are currently active in two leagues, NBT4 and W!O. The links to those leagues are on our site. If you would like to join us for practice sometime we will try to arrange it.

As you have probably guessed from the replies to your question, we are a Unit that is wide and varied. We have fun together, play together, plot together and shoot the shit together. If you have a look round our forums and website you will get a good idea of who we are and what were about.
If you decide to join us, good luck and good hunting. If not, maybe your loss maybe not.

I can assure you of one thing, everyone likes to win in ELH when it comes to actual league drops. Outside of that, when we practise, we often get tactical, walking over the maps and discussing different things on voice comms. Personally i really enjoy this aspect of it, the planning and preparation. We also discuss things in our private forums re tactics etc, so i think you would enjoy that side of it also. Other times we practise just for fun, or 'shoot the shit' as we tend to call it. Just all ELH in a locked server blowing each other away and having a laugh over comms. But make no mistake, we have a reputation as an excellent team who is well respected within the MW community for skill, fairness and sportsmanship. Read our Tradoc on the website....we try our best to hold to the ideals of the real Btech ELH.
Re Mercs: We as a Unit are in the process of kitting ourselves out with the game. Most of us have it and we have a dedicated server in both Mercs and also Black Knight. Both of them are named ELH Fort Winston. Hope to see you around.

WitchStar,
When our servers are open, everyone is welcome - but we especially like folks to come in that are interested in the unit. Sometimes we do password them for practices though. If you find the server locked, contact Slamhammer or myself or one of the Regimental CO's to see if you can join, or we can arrange something ahead of time. Our ICQ numbers can be gotten in the members list in this forum (Slamhammer, Steel, Crickett, Lancer, Buffalo 6). Usually evenings, especially Wed. and Thu. are good for the servers to be full of our folks. I know there was an issue with the dedicated Mercs server, I am not sure if it has been resolved yet. We will likely be playing BK for practice though - at least in near term - as that is what our current league drops are in. Mercs will prolly go live in January, and look for us playing Mercs more in mid-Dec.
There are other good units out there (we play against several in NBT4) so we will not feel too sorely dissappointed if you join another (just watch out for a blackjack on the back of the head some night... ). I took about 7 weeks to find a couple of units and make up my mind... Do not rush it, take your time. I can point you to a couple of other units I feel are on our level if you wish to explore others.
Get yourself TeamSpeak 1.5 (the old version) and installed and running (if you have not yet done so). We pretty much require voice comms for playing (although we do make exceptions). If you get mIRC you can connect to our IRC server to coordinate for jumping into a server with us as well. The addy is: irc.kaneda.net, the room is #ELH.

:salut: Witchstar, dont let the age thing get to you, im 35 also and probably the worst pilot here...however, I can honestly say that ELH as a group plays to win. We may carry on :drink_bud and :gulp: drink alot of coolant now and then but when it comes time to :duel mix it up with the enemy all the ppl of the ELH are there to win. Now that having been said, come to our server, join us on IRC or in Kali if u have it, get to know us a little and i think you will see we are a group that although we are geriatric we can still hang with the best of them. :rockin:

Hails Witchstar,
ive been reading your post and also wanted to comment.
Ive been in ELH for a long time now. i believe siince 96? uhg all the time flows togather after the first few years hehe. Im 32 and can tell ya that age may hinder your piloting skills. it is by no means the factor that dictates it. ive seen older pilots who took their time over the years become VERY good pilots. While I am probably an old school pilot and have some wierd ideals while playing considering the tactics used now days i feel the need to push myself further and further into becomeing a better pilot. although i dont play in alot of league drops, i do play a huge amount of fun games and even these can be used to perfect simple things such as aim and useing cover that are very important in a no respawn league games. i would honestly have to say we have every type of pilot in ELH. some while notably serous about such things as tactics. some are just simply serious in perfecting their own skills and trying to help others perfect theirs. i believe that everyone in ELH is serious to one extent or other about their playing the game. and while the game is important. i know myself and others are serous about the ppl within ELH. for me ELH is my community and my friends. i love to learn about those i play with. i learn new views about life that i find enriching. they also tend to make me a better pilot as well when someone pulls something unexpected hehe.
there is alot more about ELH i could write, but one of my downfalls is you would probably fall asleep at the keys before you got done reading it lol. ask anyone, i get extremly long winded at times
<S> and good Hunting to you Witchstar.
Hope to see ya on the battle field.
