A true story:
There was a professional Facilities person working for a large firm in London, who was very caring about the staff in the office and thier working conditions. Now one secretary was suffering from a few problems one of which was eyesight so the FM being the caring sort had a professional DSE carried out on her. When the results of the DSE came through one of the recommendations was that because of the ladies eyesight problems her existing 15" flat screen be replaced with a 17" screen. So the FM dutifully fired off an e-mail to the I.T. department explaining the problem and asking for her screen to be replaced with a larger one.
Now, you can imaging the FM's surprise, when, a few days later passing the Secretaries desk he noticed that her 15" flat screen had been replaced with a 15" old style monitor. So he got back to his desk and sent a polite e-mail to I.T. explaining the problem. He was even more surprised to receive a reply from I.T. stating that was a 17" monitor on the desk and I.T. would be more than happy to take the time to him to explain how to measure a screen size.
Now the FM in question wondering if he had gone mad took a tape measure up to the monitor and measured the glass from bottom left corner to top right corner and low and behold it said 15". So armed with this knowledge he went down to the I.T department.
Now he explained his findings to I.T. who said "No you're measuring it wrong, on a monitor you measure from the point the plastic frame merges into the outside cover and NOT the size of the glass" The FM being a polite sort of person explained that he was sure it wasn't done that way as on the previous flat screen the glass size had been 15" not the frame, and the point was she needed a bigger screen. I.T.'s reply was "The image is larger on a flat screen so a 15" flat screen is the same viewing size as a 17" monitor, if you want a 17" screen size on a monitor you'll need to order a 19" monitor, we brought those screens as 17" and thats what they are!"
Now the FM being polite didn't know what to say, afterall he could hardly speak his mind and say: "Stop talking bollocks and put a fucking 17" screen up there you stupid arsehole" so with a fixed grin he went away and to vent his anger put a post on a forum group and what a stupid bunch of overpaid arseholes work in I.T. Departments.
When he got home he was however pleased to find that when he measured his 17" monitor the way I.T. claimed it had to be measured the stupid shop had actually sold him a 19 and 1/2" one for the price of a 17" one.
the above is true.

NEVER get in to an argument with a stupid person......they will just drag you down to their level then beat you with experience
Well, actually the IT Dept. is somewhat correct about the measurements...but you do not necessarilly measure to the edge of the frame (but that is generally close enough). The measurement is the tube size - which is almost always covered paritally by the frame. That is why most monitors used to say (for instance) 17" with a disclaimer somewhere on the box stating 15.5" viewable area... Now I believe things have changed a bit and most if not all monitors are rated by viewable area...so the monitors they have are likely old, they have not bought any in a while, and are living in the stone age (when relating to computers and the rate at which things progress in relation to them). They are also correct about a 15" flat having more viewable area than a standard 15" (old method)...
However, they are still morons and arseholes for not getting a clue and helping. That is what IT Depts do - provide a service to the rest of the company...at least that is what my group did when I was a Director...
Just to spite them you should get the Dr. to write a note stating the person needs a 21" viewable screen size, and a flat screen would be better for her eyes...

Ahhhhh but, you missed something Steel.....;)
Her old monitor was a 15" flat screen so they asked for a 17" normal monitor to replace. If you check the spec of new computers with TFT (flat screen for the vertically challenged ) then you will see the screen size of such monitors is the size quoted. Therefore, a 17" normal monitor has a bigger screen than a 15" flat screen. ;)

I did not miss anything... I explained the reasoning behind the IT guy's "thought process" (if that is what it could be called - lack of common sense sounds more like it, but most folks know us IT guys are normally lacking that).
A 17" monitor was requested, the guy said "Hey! I have a bunch of those laying around ('cause they are the old ones...) and put it into place!
As stated, he is still a moron and an arsehole for not getting it and not helping resolve the issue - which is actually the job he has...

Hmmmm imo they would have been aware when requesting the 17" screen that they would get a screen with a 15.7" viewing area but this was still considered better than the 15" TFT she had. That's the way i read it to mean anyway
Btw, i havent noticed any change in the way they advertise monitors which are not TFT. I have been looking at a new computer recently and where i find one with a 17" monitor, there is always still the small print stating viewing area is actually 15.7".
You are correct tho, he is a moron and an arsehole :salut:

Then she definitely could not see it! I think she is one of those folks that needs a 19" monitor at 640x480... Some folks just do not have good eyes...
Glas,
Like I said above, us IT guys are not known for having a lot of common sense - very literal, black and white kind of thing. So naturally a 17" monitor was bigger to this guy...quite an improvement in fact! :-?
