naval warfare gaming

Post by Hammer »

Here is a site that is all about naval warfare, as well as some other types...

http://www.navalwarfare.net/content/index.html

They have a few projects going on, one of which is the modification of Jane's Fleet Command to add more realism, weapons and navies.

They also have another for Fighting Steel, a WW2 surface combat game...

Both of those games can be found in bargain bins or maybe used at EB.

While I am asking, is anyone else interested in other types of wargaming?

Lancer and someone else does Napoleonics (seems to fit Brits more than U.S. folks - I have not run into any Napoleonic gamers in quite a while...except when beta testing these two games), right? Have you guys checked out these games?

Waterloo, Napoloeon's Last Battle
Austerlitz, Napoleon's Greatest Victory?

Yah - I have done miniature wargaming... It is difficult now as I have moved a lot, not many folks do it, and the computer age has made it easy to play with folks from around the world. Still there is nothing like seeing thousands of minitures on a Napoleonic battlefield...

Just was passing info and looking to see if anyone else was doing PC wargaming...

Just to thro my 2 cents in on this one. I have ubi soft's Destroyer which i have attempted to play online. However the ubi server system is very unstable and game play is rocky at best. I like the game but do find it somewhat tedious as it is realtime and covering the entire atlantic ocean takes weeks to accomplish. I have also played a few submarine sims I like the sub sims as well..yea if u guys start something let me know i mite also be interested in that as well

Out of the games that you all have mentioned the ones that come closest to what we are talking about is Wooden Ships and Iron Men and Panzer Blitz. But those are with counters...while playing similar to Napoleonics and other miniatures games, you can not imagine (unless you have seen it) how cool THOUSANDS (O.K., well hundreds at least) of Napoleonic miniatures all painted with the colorful uniforms of the period look during a game - on terrain with woods, rivers, towns, etc. Very very cool. But the cost of the miniatures is not little, plus the investment to paint them, and then learning the painstaking rulesets....no wonder these things are not that common. And of course it is mostly us nerds that play them...

There are many kinds of miniatures and rulesets, WW2, Napoleonics, modern, ancients, and even our dear Lancer has written and had published a set for the pike and shot period called Captain-General. There are also many in between these periods... I have even done an adaptation of a board game WW1 Combat flight sim in 1:72nd scale - needs a big floor!

The computer games I mentioned are NOT like FPS games like Ghost Recon or like Mechwarrior or even Destroyer (Command?)(Ubi totally hosed those two games BTW). These are real time wargames - so they would seem boring to most folks. :D If you want to try one, go to http://shrapnelgames.com and find Austerlitz and download the demo.
