John Henry Bonham (1948-1980)

Led Zeppelin

Good Times Bad Times (studio version)

Inspiration for pretty much every rock and roll drummer that followed.

Naw, it's gotta be Phil Ehart with Kansas.
He's been the band's only drummer for over 30 years, and they still haven't replaced him with somebody younger or faster.

First band I ever saw in concert was Black Sabbath... with Journey (pre Steve Perry) as the opening act. Mid 70s. Best I can remember they were both pretty good.

I saw Kansas, too, in the late 70s... but I fell asleep in the middle of the concert.

Hmm, concerts...

The worst concert I ever saw was Van Halen, sometime around 1980 or so, at Rupp Arena. I wanted to *smack* David Lee Roth. The guy would not SHUT UP. The bass player was trying to do a solo, and DLR stopped him - to tell a joke!

The best concert was probably The Who, also at Rupp Arena, in 1980. I can only imagine what it would have been like if Keith Moon had still been alive. It was the only concert at which I was moved to jump up and yell like an idiot (when the bass drum kicked off "Won't Get Fooled Again"). I was also very impressed with the performance of the Charlie Daniels Band, even though I'm not really a big CDB fan.

The concert with the best sound: REM (mid to late 80s, at the University of KY, with 10,000 Maniacs opening). The sound was so clean it was like listening to a really nice stereo.

The concert with the worst sound: Rush at the Louisville Gardens (early 80s, with 38 Special, of all people, as the opening act). The 'festival seating' didn't help.

The LOUDEST concert was Metallica (early 90s at Rupp Arena). Yikes. Surprisingly clean and clear, especially considering the venue, but ungodly loud.

The funniest concert was Ted Nugent (late 70s), cuz the Nuge was a total loon. I was surprised no one slipped and fell onstage due to all the spit. 2nd runner up: REM at the Louisville Palace (late 80s), cuz some girl got on stage and chased Michael Stipe around and around Peter Buck.

The only three bands I ever went to see a second time: The Rolling Stones, The Who, and REM.

Bands I really wanted to see in concert but never got the chance: Led Zeppelin (they were in Cincinnati in 1977, but I had no way to get there) and Blue Oyster Cult (the latter being a near miss - I had tickets for a show at Rupp Arena in 1979, but for some reason or other they cancelled; they still tour, but not with all the original members, so seeing them now wouldn't be the same).

Dumbest pre-concert maneuver: on the way to see Stevie Nicks, I walked into a liquor store and asked for a shot of tequila. The guy said "Help yourself, buddy."

I think my first concert was the most memorable concert I went to. Back when Genius was playing at the LA Forum when I was still in high school. I remember the chicks were all wearing spandex pants at the time , and several of them were flaunting it , up on the stair well above the beer stand. They drew a big crowd of guys hooting at em . :) Also that night , Phil Collins picks up his drum sticks and played dual drums with the band. That was something to see with the light show in the back ground. I’ve held a lot respect for Genius since then .

I guess we all might have heard that DLR story. The guy would perform after a couple few cold ones heh. I finally saw Van Halen about ten years ago when they had a replacement singer. They were just okay then. Scorpions and Motley Crew were also playing with them at the Glen Helen Block Buster. I had high hopes for a good Scorpions show at the time because I liked several of their older albums and - The Zoo - but they were wore out from their tour. Motley Crew blew every body away.

Blue Oyster Cult _ Godzilla ! That would be a good one to see. I also missed out on seeing Led Zep and Styx , but I finally saw my old time favorite band KISS in consort when I went to Las Vegas. They were still pretty good actually. No fancy light show but they can still rock. They have lots of good songs from back in before the day , I was jamming to 100,000 years when I was still in pre school hehe.

From what I hear , DEO has had the best laser light show. _ Last in line

Ones I wanted to see ( but never got around to it ) were Steve Nicks / Fleetwood Mac , Pat Benatar , The Cars , U2 , Yes , Triumph and the Eagles.

Most Mesmerizing Consort

Queensryche Empire

That was their last album that I liked. I think the singer wore his voice out after that one because they started to mellow out. But Empire , Rage For Order and their previous ones were all pretty good. They sang great at the concert and performed like real musicians. I was Mesmerized for a week after the show until I finally snapped out of it.

Mostly Listing to mellow jams and oldies now. I don’t really favor today’s rock so about once a month I’ll pull out some old rock-n-roll and crank it.
