Columbia Lost
My prayers for the family and friends of the shuttle astronauts lost in the disaster this morning. Another sad day for our country.

My prayers go out to the crew and families, very very sad. According to the news, the Columbia was still using parts from the 1970s. WTH!? I think they need to keep those things in top shape.

A very sad day indeed especially since she was the first Shuttle to go up!!
I Remember making a model of her and trying to get it finished before the launch day i was so excited about it, i loved and still do love anything space related and this is a very tragic end to a long flight history for Columbia!
I just hope it doesn't turn out to be another situation the same as Challenger in that they bypassed safety regs just so they could launch on time!
Challenger being lost due to the loss of seals in her solid rocket boosters! the seals never having been tested to withstand such cold tempretures that existed on the day of that launch! and the launch went ahead against the advice of there senior technician on such matters but he was over ruled by the beurocrats who wanted the launch in time!!

A hypothetical situation I hear is that foam from the rocket booster fell off, striking the wing of the shuttle and removing a chunk of the heat shield. They knew this, but did not have a robot arm/spacewalk equipment available to survey the damage, nor were they capable of docking with the space station. This heat shield hole probably gave way during re-entry at 200,000feet and Mach 18. I heard that sensors indicated an increased drag on the left wing- possibly missing chunks would disturb the relatively smooth airflow, creating a phenomenal drag/heat increase at those airspeeds. This is just what I hear so far, anyways. Apparently the foam used is of lesser quality than in the 1970's, due to the EPA's restrictions on chemicals used. Grrrr....
