I talked to IT today...

Post by Kamikazi »

I called them up and asked about whether they could open up those 2 ports I need. They responded by saying that all ports that they deemed necessary are open, and it is their policy not to open any others for "security and firewall" issues, but its obvious they DO have the power to do it. I told her it was for a game, and the rep said that we are able to play all games WITHIN campus, but are not allowed to play games with outside connections. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!

Write a letter to someone that is ABOVE the IT Dept. The Dean of the school might be a start. I'm sure there is someone there that will be able to push the right buttons. I mean really, aren't you putting big $$$ into their school? That is rediculous IMO.

Do you have a phone line you can use, and maybe find a Free internet service in that area? We have a free internet service here in Southern California called So Cal Free Net. Costs nothing, no ads, no banners, no time limits. You do not get email, FTP, or web space, but hey at least you can get on the net for free. F4 should work good on a 56K connection.

I agree that it's BS that they tell you that. Talk to your Rep and see what they can do.

The phone and ethernet outlets are one and the same, unfortunately. What kind of argument can I make to the dean? "Can you change policy so I can play games?" However, I do agree with the "my $$$" argument. Although we all know for a fast that our $34,000 a year is going to the Chancellor's Gulfstream IV....grrrrr.....

Alright, I've successfully connected to the net through my 56k, although the phone lines run through the school too. Anyone want to help me find out if it works tonight? Its worth a shot.
