These do not change any files in the original game. They are addons/mods. As always, use care when installing. They are activated in the "Community" menu in-game.
I've found a few that I like so far:
I put a couple of these on my server - but that's only temporary. I don't want anyone to think these are being released by me and I can't be responsible to make sure they're the latest versions.

We (Gator, Steel, Bad Karma, yes Bad Karma, and myself) were playing BF2 last night when my HD crashed. I really had a great time playing BF2, that AI seems tough. I like the mod so far, no crosshairs makes it tough.
