Finally got the new furnace and AC unit installed yesterday. As the heating/AC guys were leaving, an old friend (and former owner of this house) stopped by. He wanted to see the new furnace, so we went into the cellar and had a look. "Hey," he said. "Where do you access the filter? You'll probably want to change that ever couple of months or so." We looked, but there was no obvious access panel. My friend suggested that I call the heating/AC guys and ask how to access the filter. Seemed like a good idea.
Later on, as I was microwaving some BBQ ribs (just kidding, it was actually soup) a breaker tripped, and off went the microwave, the fish tank, the TV, and the new furnace/AC unit. "Jeepers!" I said. "Sugarfoot! Great Caeser's Ghost! This can't be right!"
So this morning I called the heating/AC guys and said, "I have a couple of questions. First, where's the filter?" The guy explained where the filter was. "Cool," I said. "Second, the microwave and the furnace/AC seem to be cancelling each other out. Isn't the furnace/AC on a seperate 220 circuit?" He said they'd be right over to check it out.
Soon they arrived and we went down to the cellar. I asked the main guy to show me how to get to the filter. He removed two screws and opened a panel, looked inside and said, "This is where... uh... er... say, Mike, go out to the truck and get a filter, will ya?"

I know we all have a good chunter about it, and I'm not making excuses for them, but like you say - more the norm than the exception. problem is, these guys have a contract to do 2 in this street, one in that street, the main shopping mall, etc., So they're doing your job, thinking about and trying to plan the next job, or two or three jobs ahead. Their focus is NOT on doing a sterling job for Mr. Smith @ #10, it's about getting the friggin job done so they can move onto the next and hopefully get it all done by the end of the week say. . . . lunchtime Friday?! So they can knock off early for the w/end, and not have to do any overtime. You are not a customer mate, just a bloody contract number these days. This sort of attitude is the one that seperates the quality companies from the average joe bloggs alternative phone number in the yellow pages. Sad but true.
