Hard Drive Copying
Would anyone know of a freeware equivalent of Norton's Ghost software - I want to shift my info onto the D drive as it is 120Gb. And make use of my 80Gb C drive elsewhere.
Well, had a good look around and found some stuff, but not exactly over-awed by it. Will let you know SB if I am looking for you to get that to me somehow - I just begrudge paying £40,- for the privilege of copying my hard drive over. I know the software does much more than that, but the chances of me making use of all those features are very limited.

I use Partition Magic to Partition my hard drives. Most of the infected areas apply to your Documents and Settings and other areas of your main drive. ( Drive C )
This is why I only allocate 10 to 15 GB for my main drive and use my other HD space for storage and game programs.
It’s this way that I wont lose any programs or documents that I want to save . I copy and past them to my back up drive regularly to a back up the files on my main drive.
So with that being said , I’ve been through this plenty of times before and have been infected up the ying yang when it comes to spyware or adware. Eventually I have to reformat like I’ve done so many times before. It’s not so bad once you’ve got the hang of it and have done it for the 100th time. AND , I’ll have my most important back-up files nice and safe on another drive. Then I can copy and past my favorite Internet Explorer links and also the latest saved files on My Documents To my new freshly re-formatted main drive again. Then the cycle continues.
Also If you want to do any file sharing ,.. Do it on your old computer. Let that one get messed up beyond control. It takes awhile but it will happen.
Don’t visit any Porn Sites. MAJOR Cookies are transmitting to your computer as you view.
Cookies are the main cause I think. Once a cookie implants itself to your computer , it leads to other pop up’s or web-sites that will consecutively pop up a web site witch installs more and more cookies , that leads to other cookies that will cause more pop up’s that become more and more often that lead to other web sites that add pop up’s and more cookies that get you going Crazy in the end.
I’ve tried all the freebies and Trials that are out there that promises to rid your system of spy and adware. Just about every time one program found something new , that the other program wouldn’t. Or One program found some spy program that another spy program program installed.
But in the end , they didn’t find them all. So I said the heck with it and went down to buy McAfee Spy Ware program. It’s okay and had rid my computer of most of the crap , but there was still an itch that it wouldn’t spot out and eliminate.
That’s because My File Shearing program kept installing it. Which is why I use a different computer now days do that when I do it.

There are Linux live CD's that you can boot your computer off of, to a Linux Desktop, and run QTParted, which is an OpenSource Partition Magic clone to change up your drive.
One such Live CD is Knoppix:

Download the iso and burn to CD. Reboot you computer, and have at it.

You have just gone beyond what I believe Kodiak is willing to try and tackle... You need to know some things about linux before you try to do this stuff, unless you have some data you can play with and do not mond losing.
If you do Kodiak, you should play with this stuff... I think you can also get a trial version of Particiion Magic to use for a limited time - but you should still play with it first before you try to do the real thing.

Maybe Steel, but really with a LiveCD, where the copy of Linux boots straight off the CD to Desktop without mucking with the disk, there really is not to much to f up and turn your computer into a smoldering pile of rubble.
From there it is similar to a windows desktop, though no the same, and QTParted similar to Partition Magic, for the low low price of free. And certainly the risk of using partition magic and qtparted are about the same (that whole turning your computer into a smoldering pile of rubble on which you will need to reload windows to get working bit...)
But if you would prefer I also have Partition Magic, and can arrange your borrowing of it to do the deeds you need to do.

dude - i do linux for a living and deal with clusters of up to thousands of nodes and with IT folks that think they know linux and don't know a hole in the ground. we do stuff from straight easy installs to custom kernel development for customers.
linux is foreign to windows users no matter how similar it looks. and a user nbeeds to be familiar with partitions, mbr's, etc. before messing with stuff they do not want to lose. like i said, if he has an older disk to play with and get familiar with the stuff - all the better. if it is the only copy, then best to not risk it unless it does not matter.
but i feel the discussion/point is moot for kodiak in this instance as he has already formatted and reinstalled - twice!

Don't you love it when two IT guys get into a engrossing debate about trouble shooting and problem solving procedures? Especially when that engrossing debate is practically on the verge of an all out, drop down brawl guaranteed to end in the homicide of one or both parties concerned? I know I do. :lol:

Steel mentioned I may want to have a blast at Linux sometime. And once I eventually move my OS to the other hard drive, I may well have a play with it. Was actually thinking about doing a Linux course or two, and getting started that way. Who knows, but thanx for the links and stuff anyway guys.
