What's everyone elses favorite plane in this series, and why?
I straight up LOVE the P38L Late model. This plane is FAST (not as fast as the J model but still good), has the benefit of dual engines which means even when you have lost one you can still limp home. It does contribute to slightly less manueverability, but it is still on par with the other fighters of the day.
It's armament makes it excellent for carrying out a multitude of missions. Rockets and Bombs are great for ground assaults, and a combination of machine guns and cannons (along with the dual .50 cal's you can mount on each wing) make this plane outstanding for aerial assaults.
To top it off, it is in my not so humble opinion, a beautiful plane.
It's got everything to straight up murder the enemy any way you need to.

That's a a cool choice, I also like the P-39, for similar reasons. And more recently I have endeared myself to some of the Russian aircraft variants (fighters mainly) but their attack aircraft are built like tanks, a very welcome attribute.
I will always have a soft spot for the Spitfire, and I really love the Mustang. I can only wish they had included the Tempest & Typhoon, the Tempest in particular was considered a formidable low altitude fighter, not to mention it's ground attack capabilities.

Yeah Hudson, the P-38L is definitely a great plane.
My personal favorite plane however in the entire game is the IL-2. More specificially the IL-2M3. Why? The IL-2M3 is the ultimate ground attack plane and tank destroyer in the game. I like air to air but I'm really a mud mover so this plane just fits perfectly with my flying style and preferences. The dual 37mm cannons can easily destroy any German tanks (from the rear or side) and the BRS-132 anti-armor rockets are extremely effective as well. The IL-2M3 has extra armor protection and it is virtually a flying tank. I've had many missions where I had been hit by flak numerous times and I still managed to survive with big gaping holes in my wings. The plane is also surprisingly maneuverable. It can turn tighter than either a JU-87 or BF-110.
As for my personal favorite FIGHTER in the game, that would have to be the TA-152H. It has great maneuverability and awesome firepower (2 30mm cannons and 2 20mm cannons). If I have to fly up against late war Russian fighters, give me a TA-152H anytime.

tough choices
German M109 late models. Awesome power and great fire power. Cannons wipe out anything.
American- BAAAAAAAAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Black Sheep Baby! The F4U is a great a/c with solid armament and great handling, solid power. Great, distinctive wing design. She can carry bombs too.
British- Spitfire, but I really do hate the cockpit. All that iron in the front view really creates some blind spots. I would've thought that the Spit would have more visibility. Fire power and nimble agility make this a favorite. Personally I fly fast and turn tight. I'm not big on lumbering boom n' zoom fighters
Japanese. I never had a Japanese favorite until this past Friday. Personaly I hate the zero; it's compression drives me nuts. But the Ki84 is really a great a/c. Good HUD and SA, solid power and decent firepower make fighting for the emperer seem less like a chore and more like a day at the shooting range. Hite!!!
Italian? Hey I love my ethnic background and I strongly identify with it, but I think it's best we stick to spaghetti and sport cars. The Machetti is a great little a/c but no match for anything in the theatre really. I don't know of any other Italian A/C prolly cuz it's been blown up already. Italians should stick to wine, women, and food...perhaps not in that order. But war should be left to grouchy Germans, stodgy Brits, and loud mouth yanks. ...Cept me, I'll kick your asses anyday. ;-)
Russian. Lagg 3 are decent all around a/c. The Russian's are never good bout properly arming their a/c but they build sturdy, well performing a/c. Lagg3 is good as an all around choice. I might go with a Yak series in a pinch but they tend to be hit or miss. Some of the Yak are just awesome while earlier models or different model times can end your flight career prematurely because they fly like washing machines.

I keep intending to pick-up a copy of something that will do the early jet stuff with fairly realistic FMs, just for some fun dogfighting. I thionk the agreed preferred game was StrikeFighters?

I never really did get into the Pacific Fighters or the IL2 game. I guess these games and ones like it is where most of this conversation is coming from. So I had to scout around the internet to find out what all the hubbub is about and what the abbreviations mean.

Have to be honest, searching/googling for info is not my own fave pastime mate. Although I am very impressed with the missus, she seems to have a knack for it. So much so, when I want something and haven't found what I'm looking for, I tend to ask her to do it for me. Works nearly every time!
