There are certainly some strange elaborate names popping up recently in the new members line on the forum main page, eh? (No offence intended)

How about everyone explaining where they got their user name from? As for me, my user name comes from a famous Waffen SS officer by the name of Kurt Meyer who became legendary on the Eastern Front for his mastery of armor and infantry tactics. He was dubbed "Panzer Meyer" by his fellow soldiers during the war.

Wow, I'm actually surprised my name is still on the list.

My ICQ isn't right though, who should I contact to have that changed?

Grifter- a thief that cons and kills his prey for profit.

I earned my call sign during those hey days of Janes Fighters Anthology and my first virtual squadron- the 421st Black Widows. We were flying F-14s on Barcap and got jumped by migs (29s I think). Outnumbered, I had a few on my six but went to help my lead anyway. Nose on, fired a missle at one of his bandits, pulled some funky jinks and got the migs off of my six and went gunz. Took three or four of em out before I got damaged and had to run for home. I think my lead made it that day too, but my memory has faded. Anyway, my flight and squad leader, Viper, said I was a thief, that I totally hoodwinked the bandits and turned the fight to our advantage. I mentioned the name Grifter, and he liked it and said I ought to use that as my call sign. I think I was using Raptor before because the F22 had just been introduced as the premier fighter of the future. Grifter just sort of stuck after that.

Nice idea Panz,
Well mine was pretty simple - I used to play MechWarrior, and my fave add-on was the Clan Ghost Bear where the Kodiak was one of the new mechs, and it featured in the intro to the add-on. I was totally smitten with the damn thing, and loved crewing one on one-off missions. Secondly, my boy's hockey team in Canada sports the kodiak bear emblem on their shirts. The kodiak is a native bear of canada (correct me if I'm wrong there :?: ), and seeing as I was resident there at the time I felt it was appropriate.

Back in the day, I used to play Softball 4-5 days a week, hence my chosen name. I live, eat, and breath the sport of Softball. I now play one day a week (Sunday nights). I have been on the same team for over 4 years now, same group of guys. In 4 years, we have won 4 championships (1st place, like winning the World Series), 3 Runner ups (2nd Place), and 1 very bad season (We went 1-9 in a A/B league). So anyway, Softball is my name, Softball is my game. 8)

I know Softball isn't much of a military callsign type name, but I thought it was fitting for me with my passion for the sport. I used to go by the name HUNTER at SIMHQ, but someone had taken it when SIMHQ started their new message boards back in Oct 1999.

I just painted my back door to the garage and put some new windows in. Woot . Now I can see out the windows and view Mountains in the back drop. Nice . I’m going to hang some Christmas lights in a minute :) I just wanted to drop this post before then , so ….

Well I hope it’s okay with the others. There’s still a few missing like Buffalo Six. I keep wondering if he got it from that Movie I saw on IFC with the same name. They have some good Independent Films on that channel sometimes. That’s for another story tho. So anyway here are a few more unit names.

Here’s the link

phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=44807&highlight=#44807

And here’s what’s in it.

Your Unit Names ?

I've always wondered where some of the ELH pilots got their unit names.

Like does Black Hawk like the Chicago Black Hawk?s ?

Does Glasscelts really put allot of Alka ? Seltzer in a glass that much ?

Does Mincemeat , mean that that?s what your Mech will look like after he?s done with it ?

Is Buffalo 6 from Buffalo NY ? If so what does the 6 mean ?

Did Cricket have a cricket collection when he was growing up ?

Well , I start by letting you know where I got My name. Remember the old Robo Tech Animated Cartoon Series ? Min May , Rick Hunter , Bretai , Well , there was an ACE pilot called Commander Fokkor , who was the Leader of Scull Squadren. They flew Fighter Jets that Transformed into guess what , ? Battle Mechs !! So it was years later that I learned that I spelt his name wrong , but by that time , I just stayed with name that people knew me by , Falker.

hmmm well lets see.

i started mechwarrior on MPlayer under the name Cheeno. why cheeno? ok this sounds strange but i was looking threw a hot rod magazine and this guy had a realy nice olds 442 and his name was cheeno something. so WTH i couldnt decide on a name so i picked that one. i played in Clan Phoinex for about a year or so and the Mplayer leagues were falling apart so a bunch of us were told to head over to Kali and look for a league there that we all may play in. we went and found M3L. M3L only used Battle tech unit names so we coudlnt use Clan Phoniex and decided on Clan Diamond Shark. well the rest of CP decided they didnt want to change the unit name so stayed on Mplayer. Well, those of us who came over felt sort of bad asking the M3L admin to create DS and then bail on them so we decided to split off and remain. For some reason this was seen as a bad thing by the rest of CP and was told that if we played here we would be kicked out of the clan and that was when i decided to change my name. i thought long and hard and decided on NightHawk... i changed my name and Low and Behold. who happens to show up but another Nighthawk... i got bitched out in Private message by him and told him it was a honest mistake and then changed my name to BlackHawk. i never even KNEW there was a hellicopter, mech, or anything else named that lol. For some reason, im one of those ppl who like to change names with new beginings or what ever and when HH was in Starleague i tried to join up under them as FIREnASH. that didnt last long... my fun player name is VoidHawk. named after a fighter Space craft in a book i read about. thats about me and names... now days i go by BH.. and anyone who knew me long.... BS works just as well

BTW. the K at the end of BlackHawk-K stands for Kalasa. i took the blood name when i was Khan of DS in M3L. DS was a big part of my mechwarrior and i feel it still is in alot of ways and that is the main reason why i retian the K even today.

'Tach Deneva' was the name I came up with for a Star Wars RPG character (an X-wing pilot, of course) back in the early 90s. The character was roughly based on Wedge Antilles - so I wanted him to have a name with the same cadence: one syllable, three syllables.

It's pronounced Tak Den' ah vah.

'Tach' derived from a character in the Wild Cards anothology series, an alien named Doctor Tachyon. 'Deneva' was, or so I thought at the time, the name of a star or constellation (but as it turned out, it's actually the name of a colony in the original Star Trek).

I only played that character twice, but the name stuck - I used it on a local BBS back in 1994 when I got my first PC. There for a while, some of the folks I met via that BBS actually called me 'Tach'.

If any of you guys were around back in MW2 Mercs days, I was WarBird (of the NBT Clan Fire Mandrill, which later became the NBT Clan Jade Falcon). I worked my way up to Galaxy Commander WarBird Pryde, CO of the Jade Falcon Galaxy. I was also a member of the SOBs, a non-league 'just for fun' team. And no, SOB doesn't mean what you think it means. Heh.

...well, you all have probably heard of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid... I suppose that's where I got the name, although I'm not much of a western type. Until moving to Massachusetts, I've always lived (and grew up) in sunny climates, like Florida, ARizona, and California, and the primary motivation in my life is music, so "Sundance" speaks volumes to my spirit and character.

BTW, I think Glasgow Celts is a football team...

Malin, because I am, are and will be, it's been my nickname for 18 years now. Most embarrassing moment, discovering that Malin is a female name in Sweden. However there have been numerous famous people (well relittively) thoughtout the ages with either the surname or forename of "Malin" (General Malin, David Malin, Baso Malin etc)

Malin (just plain me)
Malino (Squadron Leader, AFVS)
Malin- (Pilot Officer, Undertakers with 100% discount)
ELH*Malin (Just about every rank possible, ELH)
Malin0 (Various other games, RTCW, T2 etc)
Moolin (Leutenant, I/Jagdgeschwader 54 "GrЭnherz")

I have had a facination with Pegasus (Pegasai?) since a Kansas concert back in my formative years. They opened with a great big laser pegasus flying across the screen to "Icarus, Borne on Wings of Steel". It was THE defining moment in my life. So I've had lot's of handles over the years, but in '96 I bought my first PC because there was a game I'd heard about a few years earlier that had giant robots you could pilot. I went to Wal-Mart and bought my firts two Games, the trial for Mechwarrior 2, and Starseige. I never opened the latter, took it back and exchanged it for a Putt-Putt game for my kids. When I tried the trial and it promted for a sibko, I knew it had to be a cool pilot's callsign. So drawing from my past, I thought of Pegasus, but that was too corney. Adapt that to my Native Okie background, and the Native American sounding "Featherhorse" was born. When I went online, AOHell only had room for Fethrhorse. That's where DS~Fethrhorse came from. Ravenwater was a Hell's Horses' bloodname that worked with Featherhorse pretty well.
And that's pretty much it, same "callsign/nom de modem" all these years and no plans to change it.

And there was me thinking i had blabbed way too much about my love for the Celts, and all along Falker wasnt listening!

Correct Sundance, it is the men in green and white hoops who play on the hallowed turf affectionately known as 'Paradise'

My choice of this name was actually a spur of the moment thing. I had never played any games online until i came across MW4 whilst staying with my brother-in-law. After a week of slagging him off saying he was a Billy-no-mates cos he was playing on the Net so much, he challenged me to actually play the game and NOT like it. Naturally i took up the challenge.....and lost So he threw me in to a multiplayer game and told me to pick a name. Et voila!

Funny thing was, about 2 days later he was showing me how to play CTF. I was doing crap as usual and he took over for a game. He played under my name cos he couldnt be bothered quitting the server to change it, when up popped Lancer and started chatting away to me, saying how good i was at CTF and did i want to join ELH. I remember laughing with my brother-in-law at the irony of it and thinking i would give it a go cos they seemed like a good bunch. 2 years later....... :salut:

Previous nicknames have included: Duracell (died, came back, died came back, died came back, and went on and on and on and on and on...like a long life battery) and Nexus...cos it sounds cool

A long time ago in a land far away, I was 14yrs old & hung out with the older kids on my block (17&up) at a tire/tree swing on the Conestoga creek near my house.Well alot of people would let the tire out over the creek when they were done with it instead of hanging it up at the tree.So I being alittle wirey kid I use to crouch down & jump as hard as I could at the tire & grab it & hang on. The momentum I had would swing me out & back to the creekbank where we jumped off of.On one of our more non-coherent days (yous figure it out :gulp: puff:puff) I jumped & one of the other guys fell down laughing & when I got back to the bank & he got control of himself I had a nicname that has stayed with me ever sence. I look back now & still laugh.

Oshay = Name of an insignificant character in Timothy Zahn's Dark Force Rising, Book 2 of 3 of the Grand Admiral Thrawn Trilogy of Star Wars Novels.

Upon seeing the name, I seized it for myself, and never let it go.

and as you can see ELH has gone though the excercise as well. but now we can all share together...

i have a different callsign that i actually earned, as opposed to selecting myself. it is very fitting, although Steel suits me as well... i use it on special occasions. very few here actually know it even though this is where i earned it and have used it...and i am sure those that do will not share. ;)

I like Star Wars. :)

Oh, and sometimes when I fly I "feel the Force" and manage to break a split second before I get shot. It only works when I'm paying attention, though. MP usually means vox chatter and usually distracts me too much. So I die a lot more online than off! ;)

Understand on that Jedi. We are all a shade too talkative whilst there is still ongoing mission action. I guess we should start getting back in the habit of using the text speech option at those sort of moments. What do you guys all think?

I say a vote in the beginning of each game.

Post by Hudson »

I say a vote in the beginning of each game night. Sometimes everyone just wants to talk and goof off. Remember RvS days when we would get stupid, and just frag everyone straight off the beginning of a mission, shoot each other [and especially Grifter] in the back, and.... Ya, we are playing games, for fun and stress relief, and sometimes the light hearted BS stuff is a welcome release.

On the other hand, some nights, everyone seems to want to be serious and cut the chatter and kill things all professional like.

An informal proverbial show of hands would probably be a good indicator of which way everyone wants to go. If you don't agree and don't want to be talkative or serious, you can always politely say thanks but not thanks for the night.

The real problem I think is the inability to independently control the volume for the game and Ventrilo. Sometimes I can't hear people over the in-game sounds, which can make things difficult. Other times, I can't hear in-game messages over people talking, which makes things hard the other direction.

If only there was a hotkey for raising/lowering Ventrilo playback while in a game.

Buffalo 6 was one of the call signs my dad used as a FAC in the central highlands of Vietnam. His other callsign was Helix when he changed airbases. He flew OV-10s that tour before going back as a B-52 crew commander (pilot) and served over there until they pulled the BUFFS out. All I remember was that we were stationed at Dyass (sp?) AFB when he was flying buffs. Before that we lived in Dallas (my moms home) while he did his FAC tour, but I was very young and barely remember much of that....anyway... I have some tapes of his missions, one as a FAC puting in a Airstrike near a ARVN firebase with of all things a Aussie in the back seat....kinda intertaining to listen too as they try to confirm what type of CBU's the F4's are hualing. Other tapes i have are B52 strikes up north, liek Vinh Airbase....I lost count but over 50 SAMs are shot during the 30 min bomb run my dad is on. The tape starts just prior to the IP. A rather eye opening experence, espically when the EWO calls a tracking SAM and starts to counter it. It misses, and goes ballistic and detonates well above the 3 ship cell, but that SAM call still makes my heart skip a beat.

In other forums and game groups I go by Hookecho, because I live in Kansas and during the spring you watch the radars closely for that hook to form on the SW quad of nasty thunderstorm cells denoting a twister.

Some of the weird name you see in the new join lists are people from my Guild Wars Guild. Steel was nice enough to set up a forum for us to use. But that is another topic for another day.
