check out the Call of Duty 2 demo...

it is unrealistic in a couple of things, but it sure does give a feeling of the environment. this just might be a must get...

Eh. I tried the demo and didn't care for it at all. Yeah, it has pretty graphics and all but the soldiers all look too "glazed" and glossy due to the overuse of bump mapping. The game is just too colorful and bright for WWII and the scripting is so heavily used that I feel like I'm on a ride at an amusement park instead of fighting in a combat situation.

I absolutely love Red Orchestra but its not similar in any way to COD 2 except that they both take place during WWII. The small arms modelling and bullet ballistics in RO is more realistic and the weapons damage caused on infantry is a lot more realistic as well. Suffer one or two bullet hits in RO and you are dead. In the COD games you can take multiple hits before you die and conversely, I have emptied entire clips into German soldiers only then to see them dust themselves off and stand up again. I saw that happen several times while playing the demo.

I did play Medal of Honor way back when it first came out but that was mostly for the multiplayer aspect. I did finish the single-player game and I thought it was "ok". Of course, this was 3 years ago so my tastes have changed since then.

I also played the demo for Brothers In Arms and I didn't like it either.

I still think H&D2 is the top of WWII FPS, even though it's a tac-shooter and not a "pure" shooter.
That said, I liked MOH:Pacific Assault. There are almost no health packs now; I think I saw 2 or 3 all game long. Instead, you have a medic that will heal you when you go down. However, he's limited in the number of times he can heal you. He also might be mortal; mine never died, but it's possible he could've been killed.
MOH:PA is still pure shooter action, and it has its CoD-style (previously known as MOH-style :)) scripted set pieces, but CoD2 I felt blew it with the "heal by sitting still for a few seconds" crap instead of a medic or health packs. The original CoD I did enjoy, and if you can get it cheap now I'd recommend it. It was short, though, so don't pay TOO much.

So, tops is H&D2. RO is 2nd place, but it has no real missions, just capture point action. After that I'd say MOH:PA and CoD 1 are equally good, especially in that MOH:PA you actually have a team that you know and learn about, similar to the first Vietcong.

I started FEAR, but it still needs another patch. LOTS of CTDs for no apparent reason. It is good, though.

What do you need to play RO? Is it an after market mod for Unreal tourny or something?

It's a mod for UT 2004 so first thing required is a copy of Unreal Tournament 2004. Once that is installed, you can then download Red Orchestra for free and install it.

Are you getting these CTD's during actual gameplay or do you get them even when sitting at the main menu?

I've only had them when playing. Of course, I don't exactly hang out in the menus for a long time!
I'd say I get one roughly every 15 mins or so. :(

I was considering purchasing FEAR & Quake 4 for the wife @ Xmas, but if FEAR is having lots of problems like that I may just hang off with that and use the money on something else. maybe buy it for her on XBox if it exists on that platform (keep her off the PC, eh? )

FEAR isn't on the consoles. Q4 is, though. At least Xbox 360.
I'm hoping the next patch fixes these things...

Couple things

I had FEAR trouble too, but for me, it appeared to be GPU related. Mine would crash consistently until I fiddled with my vid card. ... Right now, it's rock solid. The other option was to run it at 1024 resolution with no bells/whistles. I think my card was overheating - you might check your vid cooling/case cooling and see. However, could be driver related

I just recently read that the new version of RO (Jan 06) will be Steam-powered. So, might be worth checking this out for all you HL2 peeps out there.

Wont that detract from the visual effects somewhat?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, so ...

Reply 1) Well, it just takes a bit of water and some coal and you can do quite a bit.

or

Reply 2) Uh, it should actually vastly improve the visual effects.

Very nice Bri! But no, I was being serious (for a change   ) this time. I was under the impression from most of the reviews that the visual effects were what really made FEAR so good. So, I am guessing thenn that they feel improvement can be made with the Steam engine - strange when you consider carbon based fuels are almost a thing of the past, eh?

oh, misunderstanding. RO has nothing to do with FEAR. RO was a UT04 mod.
