Speed is dependant on how much you pay. For our area, we get 5 Meg D/L and 1.5 Meg U/L Fiber for $34.00. We can get 30 Meg D/L with 10 Meg U/L for $120.00 if we wanted.
Cable is shared bandwidth, which means, the more users on the system, the more your service will degrade. DSL and Fiber is dedicated.
There is a great site for checking your speeds, http://www.broadbandreports.com/
Here are my stats from that site:
2005-11-23 19:35:17 EST: 4909 / 1786
Your download speed : 4909 kbps or 613.7 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 1786 kbps or 223.3 KB/sec.
T1 Internet access technology allows Internet data to run up to 1.544 megabit per second
A private dedicated full T3 circuit provides 45Mbps of bandwidth. The 44.736 Mbps speed of a T3 is actually the result of the aggregate-multiplexed signal of 28 T1s.
A T3 circuit is made up of 28 T1s or 672 64Kbps channels

Well, it's Sunday morning here and I just completed that test:
455 d/l & 237 u/l
Which I think is about right for a DSL connection . . . . .

My internet pefromance wasn't always this good. My download/upload was much slower when I first got my cable modem about 3 years ago.

Yeah, but if I'm not mistaken - Nem is on a 2MBit line. And that's the same for me, indicating that there must be a problem on my connection given his calculated speeds for download.
