Well.....I've had the AR out on the range twice now. Last weekend was kinda frustrating using iron sights......my eyes suck!
So I needed some sort of optic help. So I picked up a Aimpoint clone called the Spot Mk3. These guys make the same sight for Burris from the same factory for about $100 less than the Burris. So I figured $115 for a non parallaxing (sp?) red dot might be a good place to start. It's mounted on a A.R.M.S. throw lever 30mm Ring with a #22 M68 EX cantilever spacer so that it Co-Witnesses the Irons. Being as I have never shot a red dot, I had no idea what to expect. I had a few problems to start off, like I have to wear my glasses because if I dont, the red dot looks like a set of fuzzy grapes. Then on the 3rd shot, I lost the dot....then it was intermitant......cause was a loose/not fully tightened battery cap. After that....it shot like a champ. I shot about 30 rounds to get used to the red dot and get it zero'd, then I set up at 100 yards. Shot 20 rounds, had a few flyers that I blame on the standard trigger....a.ka. Howitzer trigger.....god that NEEDS work!

And here is the gun on the bench. I shot off a rest to sight in. Once I get used to the gun, I'll work on freehand stuff. BTW, this is a friend of my Dad's, who has this nice 200 yard range behind his house. Ahhhh the joys of rual Kansas. As you will see below, its pretty much a bench rest range.

and point of order...thats a 1x30mm red dot with a 4MOA dot. No magnifacation. In fact its more of a CQB sight, a shoot with both eyes open type of thing instead of a target scope. I'll shoot this one for a while and decide if I want to get an Aimpoint Comp3ML or just a Aimpoint 3X magnifier on something like a Sampson flip mount. OR I may just say screw it and get a Trijicon ACOG TA01NSN.....not sure if the 3x mag of a ACOG is worth the $800+ price tag even at dealer cost.

Proper Site Alignment
I don't know what your 'iron sites' consist of, but being an AR-15 I'm guessing it _may_ be the same as an M-16.
If the rear site is a small round circle (rear site aperture), and you have a front site post, the way you want to do it is to have the tip of the front site post dead center of the rear site aperture.
Your front side post should be clear. But, because the eye cannot focus on the target and the post at the same time this will result in the target being blurry. This is quite normal, albeit disconcerting, and something that everyone using this type of site must overcome.
But, if it is this type of site, you can rest assured your eyes aren't bad; just unpracticed. Trying to focus through the aperture can make you damn bug eyed if you do it wrong.

You _should_ be able to put a round close to center of a man size target at 500 yards once you get your windage and elevation set up for range and wind/weather conditions.

it's not that I dont understand irons, its that my eye sight beyond say 30 yards sucks. I have outstanding eyesight up close (always been a benifit to my modeling and miniture painting) but out past 30 yards....not good. It's not been a problem when I hunt upland game except sometimes in the 1st field looking into the sun. But most of those shots are inside 40 yards and a fat pheasant is pretty easy to pick up agaist the sky.
I learned to shoot from my dad who when he was in college, shot for the OU rifle team in National Match and competed a few times at Camp Perry way back when. He is now a dedicated benchrest shooter, who competes nationally at places like the Super Shoot in Ohio, The national shooting center at Ratone, NM etc. Is he a world class shooter? not even close, but he has flashes of good fortune and has shot some incredibly small groups. So since i was abotu 8, I have been on a shooting line here and there. I'm just not much of a deer hunter, as it's not hunting here in the High Planes, its an ambush. I perfer walking a field and kicking up birds.
Who knows what going back to rifles will bring.

oh, the movie Red Dawn....here I was thinking he was waking up after....oh never mind.
What you see there is 2-20 rd. clips and 1-30 rd. I have a few more 30's but when firing off the bench or in a prone positions, the 30 rd. clips cause the gun to "post" on the mag.
Dont worry Falker, if someone broke in, they would not see the AR. I have a nice 12 ga. Mossberg pump with a folded stock and a Surefire tactical illuminator for a home defense unit. Now a 12 ga. shooting 1 3/4oz. copper #5's may not produce an instant corpse of the badguy, but there is nothing walking on 2 legs that a 12 ga. wont drop. He may get up....but I promise you..he will be going in the general direction of away. I choose a 12 ga. because I dotn have to worry about over penetration, i.e. the shot going thru my walls and thru the walls of the neaibors house etc.
If I need any follow on shots, or he wants to slug it out....then my 1911 .45 APC will ruin his day with JHP. Again I went with the JHP to reduce the over penetration problem.
