I was interested in HD DVDs back when I thought it would use any connector (including component inputs, which is all my HDTV has). Now all this DRM talk and the idea that I need to connect my players to the internet??

Not damn likely. Frankly, good standard DVDs look almost as good as HDTV. You'd think with more than double the res you'd see more difference, but you don't. I'll stick to standard DVDs until I HAVE to move to HD I think.

I understand your point of view on this one Jedi! We have Sky satellite receivers in our house, one is for recording programs for Kerrie so she can watch them when she has time, the other is a normal receiver upstairs in Lauren's room. For initial connection activation there is a requirement to connect the phone line too, and this is also used for further activation of certain channels for one time only viewing (pay per view) and so on. Anyhow, I'm busy doing some stuff with the computer, I think I was moving from one location to another in the house. The phone rings, and on the other end of the line is a rep from Sky TV:
"Hello, can I speak to Mr or Mrs McKee please?"
"Speaking"
"Sir, we are receiving an indication that you've disconnected your telephone line. Would you please explain why?"
" How would 'NO' grab you!?"
"Sir, your contract requires that you have your telephone line connected. You must inform us prior to any disconnection."
(* Don falls off chair in disbelief!)
"Actually, I think you'll find that my contract necessitates that I connect my phone line for initial activation of service, and operation of other facilities, nothing more! My telephone line in no way has anything else to do with your company, and there is no legal obligation for me to offer your company ANY explanation whatsoever. This contract for my telephone line is between myself and British Telecom - should I have BT send your company some legal advice on that matter? Perhaps you'd care to reread the contract I have with your company? Has there been any change to the contract since I signed it? And if so, where is my letter of courtesy warning? I'm considering that there must be some form of legal issue here, where your company is monitoring my telephone line without with my prior consent. I have no recollection of that being part of any contract I signed? And it certainly says nothing to that effect in the contract I have infront of me! Perhaps you'd care to put your supervisor on the line so I can inform him of my intent to look at this with my solicitor . . . . . . .

It's hard to say how it's going to pan out. If they choose to be high handed then I too will likely stick to DVD's. However, the lossless audio has me more excited than the high resolution picture.

I did read an article today claiming that Sony is dropping the requirement for HDCP for HD resolutions and will allow full HD res on analog connections like component video. Sounds like Sony's scared that HD-DVD will gain traction over Bluray. In any event, if the HDCP requirement is enforced by either Hires disc camp, I'm sticking to DVD.

yeah - gut three things definitely have me holding back...

the response rate of 12ms - i would prefer it were faster for gaming

i just got a car repair bill of $1600

the gateway 21" widescreen looks really good to for 300 less...

$300 less than what? I see it priced at $599 with free shipping ... which is more expensive than the 20.1 ($539) and less than the 24 ($799).

Am I missing something?

Understandable if you simply can't, but I'd be going for the larger screen TBH. 12ms isn't too bad I don't think. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 213T, not sure about the response time on that, haven't got the book handy to check. But I don't suffer any problems with that.

your is 25ms... i woudl expect some ghosting/smearing when playing fps games...maybe watching fast motion video as well.

no, 12ms is not that bad but i would rather erase any doubts...

Yep, know where you're coming from. Why pay out a load of cash and not get exactly what you want, need or find that there was a facility that you could have had in your favourite make at the same price. Certainly much as you might want to just rush off and buy with all the deals hanging around (don't want to miss a good deal, eh!), it's smarter just to press the self-control autopilot.
Can't speak for fast motion video, but certainly in all FPS to date no apparent ghosting/smearing. But my next purchase will be taking that into account too. Am sure as time goes on newer games will likely begin to show that up more clearly.

Looks nice, but the photo doesn't give you a really good impression of the dimensions. Maybe I'll have to go see what I can find that approximates those dimensions. Looks nice enough though, and the price not all that bad either.

Cool! As you can appreciate the wide screen can give the optical illusion of the monitor being larger than it really is. And 24" may sound a lot bigger than 21", but that measurement is diagonally across the screen. When that fact is added to the widescreen ratio, you begin to realise that the monitor may not actually be much bigger at all.
