"Shoo! Shoo! Go away! Oh God, he's got a monkey." -- Ms Purple
Oh dear . . . .
Drawing the firearm should never be an issue, as long as it is presented correctly (and as always NEVER pointed in the direction of anyone, even in jest). Afterall, the presentation WAS about firearms. So it should be expected that they will be presented during the demonstration. However, a safer method may been to use an overhead projector to present that part.
More importantly, is the fact that he had the damn thing loaded! A basic rule is that a weapon should be unloaded BEFORE even entering a building. Unless specifically on duty with the intent/necessity to draw the weapon for self-defence purposes. Even law enforcement personnel going into the local doughnut shop to have their morning break should unload their weapons, because they are no longer on duty for that break period.
Kudos to the guy for attempting to continue the demo, even though I realise he was in a lot of pain. Taking one in the foot with .40, that had to hurt. However, procedure dictates that his colleagues should have then removed his weapon from his possession, brought immediate closure to the demonstration, while refusing to allow him access to another weapon regardless of his intentions. He should then have been escorted to hospital for treatment whilst being informed that he was formally suspended and request he turn over his badge, until an investigation is concluded regarding the incident.
Finally, the video is a very good example of what CAN happen, no matter who you are! The DEA would do well to make good use of the video for the purposes of the demonstration in the first place. However, they should also gain the agent's approval for such. Fool or not, he has a very good point regarding his career, future. Legally he does have a case. The DEA are in breach of his rights. We're all big boys, we all have to take jibes and piss-takes from the rest of the lads when we screw up. We've all done it at some point. However, there comes a point where that jibing etc turns into bullying of a kind. And much as he may be a big tough DEA agent, we a re all susceptible to being put down eventually. Some just wear down faster than others.
But what a cock-up, eh?! LOL
