Kodiak and Grifter are post inflatting.   Just kidding guys, and you both are right, with Russia dismantled and the Warsaw pack being a joke at best there is a far bigger danger that no one can forcast. Like Kodiak said there is a danger looming in the darkness that we can't even concieve. Its the unknown that is killing us. On a side note when you think about it, we may have to spend even more money on inteligence and counter inteligence than we did during the cold war especially that damn Star Wars program (please someone help me understand that multi trillion dollar blunder by our esteemed Reganites), there is a hidden danger that just might bring about the end of the old freedoms that we held dear to our hearts. Who has that quote in there tag line that goes something like this: A country that is powerful enough to give you your freedom is also strong enough to take it away.

While I dont share the OP's un-love of the Turkey..er...I mean Tomcat, it is old in the tooth and really without a well defined mission. The Superduper Hornets can do it's job and then some. So farewell favored warhorse.
But having said that...not all old war horses deserve to be put out to stud so to speak. Case in point.....the Big Ugly Fat Fucker....B-52. The keels on the current (and shrinking) fleet of B52s was laid here in Wichita cicra 1962. But while I cant get into specifics, some interesting projects and propsals are evolving around the BUFF. P&W quit making the engines in the mid 70's and they want to or have by now shut down the engine parts lines leaving a finite supply of parts. Soon, you will see a BUFF with 4 high by-pass turbo fans in place of the 4-2 engine pods. One of the problems to over come is how to keep the aircraft on the runway if you loose an outboard engine. Not sure what they have come up with by I saw my dad limping around after spendign a week in the SIM working on a solution, he was limping because of hammering the rudder heh.
Some where I have a tape of a test out at edwards of my dad "driving" a buff on the tarmac trying to see if they could drag the simulated bottom edge of a single large high by-pass turbo fan on the ground in a high speed turn. Have you ever seen a Buff in a beauteful 4-wheel drift looking like a world of outlaws car on the high line? I was damn funny watch him white smoke the tires.
On the topic of doom and gloom....not really worried about cold war stuff at this time, what scares me is Mr. Dinnerjacket (or how ever you say his name) the leader of Iran and his cronies who want the apocolyse so they can bring about the 12th Iman (who lives at the bottom of a well in Iran) to come forth and enlighten the world with a new Calpathet (sp?)...I shit you not, that guy(and his followers) is freaking loony toons, and these guys are on the verge of going new-clu-er (a Bushism). I fear we will be the second generation to see a nuke used in anger. Hopefully we can survive the after glow.
