8800gtx opinions

Post by Hammer »

well, i have mine and am assembling my new pc. i have seen on simhq about some issues with them, so did a google search. seems a lot of folks are having issues with the 8800gtx's. so, should i return it (box is still unopened) and get a 7950 gx2 instead? upgrading to one later in the year?

I really can't keep track of graphic cards. They change every other month....it's just too much.

Well, the 7950 gx2 is likely cheaper. *shrug*

i've looked at a few threads and I'm initially at the conclusion that people are idiots, but I get that feeling whenever I read forums.

someone was having crashing issues with his Opteron 146 running at 3GHz!! on a 500W!! PSU You think that might be the problem?
[opteron 146 is a 2GHz proc and they recommend a 650W PSU for the 8800GTX]

I haven't done enough looking yet to conclude that the 8800 is a lemon, i'm keeping the one I have.

the wattage recommendations mean nothing... what really matters is the amperage output on the 12V rails, and is the one dedicated to the grahics card.

but yes, most folks do not know what they are doing. still, there are plenty of complaints/issues.

i do not think it is a lemon, but may have some issues due to potentially being rushed...

well wattage dose mean smthing. Teh AMD chips are power hogs to the point you ant 650-750 Watt power supplies. A 500 may not be big enough witht he current AMD chips. that being said AMD has JUST released ther enw chips that is on a 65 nanomeater wire, which is down from 90. Basiclay means less power and heat. But that may have been part of there issue.

To be honest, I well not buy a card as soon as it hits marker, wait a month or 2 and you well see massive threads on it.

Also I may recomend looking at newegg.com and cheking the card. Look at the custome rreviews, you well get a good ida of the quality.

i know that wattage alone is not terribly meaningful, but it was an overclocked opteron AND an 8800 -- both powerhogs in their own right. pair that up with some other hardware and he's asking for stability problems. If not from the PSU, then from the 50% overclocked AMD.

i'm telling you guys - part of my responsibilites over the last 3 years are testing power supplies and power draw on computer systems... yes, if you are talking 250 or 300 watt psu - then wattage matters of course. but at 500 watts it can probably handle that load - but it does depend upon the particular power supply and the amperage it can supply on that particualr rails.

with that said - i will prolly keep it. check this article out:

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.h ... VzaWFzdA==

it is long, but gives a lot of technical detail on the 8800 cards.
