Nvidia 8800 Power supply requirments

Nvidia 8800 Power supply requirments
I believe there is some confusion on what is required for a power supply for this card.
NVIDIA does recommend at least a 450W power supply that can deliver up to 30A on the +12V rail.
Now mot power supplies have several 12V lines each at about 18A. there are ones with higher amps but those are harder to find.
but take this Power supply from OCZ

It says SLI ready, meaning it needs even more amp's. It comes with 2 PCI-E connectors but looking at the power here is what it says the following
+3.3@36A,+5V@30A,+12V1@18A,+12V2@18A,+12V3@18A,+ 12V4@18A,-12V@0.8A,+5VSB@3.0A
There is no 12V rail with 30A only a bunch with 18A.
Now lets look at a diffrent site, BFG's 8800 cards to be specific

8800GTX card, and the Min requirements for power here state
"A 450W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 30A or more*"
The word combined specifically makes me think. So do that mean if their is several 12V lines, do we just add the amp number and thats what they are talking about. then this ocz would be a combined 72A. If this is how it works Buff and myself have been loking at this the wrong way.
also buff means that the power supply in the case for Shushans pc we are looking at would be good enough for that specific card (need to look over numbers there again, but from memory it would be if it has the PCIe connector)
so can someone either tell me whats going on, or can someone point me to a site that explains this crap out.

yep saw that one. but I am basing my thinking on the fact that again say this OCZ one and others all with 18A 12 V runs in there description (noted by 12V@18A) state SLI ready. SLI being a power hog requiring what 30A or better makes me wonder about this. I just can't find a site that explains the power supply's
O alos note I did fine on the nvidia site a list of power supplies they say re SLI ready including the OCZ ones.

Dose depends on the SLI card, IE 8800 7900 da da da. but lists off ones Buff we both thought could not handle a stock 7900 card not alone a 8800 or SLI. Now do note I think more power is always better, rather have a surplus then be under. But if we can get say a 100$ power supply that wel be more thne enough for a 8800 then hey I know what I am getting for me new pc lol

This where you got the details of which memory module to get buff. also can you link to the actual memory you got buff, as the memory you listed in the forms matches several models of memory on newegg.

Several links tho there is a power supply calculator that I found tells me 400 Watt supply would do for my needs tho I am still getting min 600 when I get a system. but tis interesting info.

Tho do note one of the sub pages of a above site ( http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnec ... ctors.html ) dose who a PCIe cable which is sued if your power supply dose not have a PCIe cable. It hoops us to 2 different 4 pin peripheral connectors when they do say you want to make sure that the 2 you hook into are form separate lines form the PSU. so my thinking here is you are adding the current on the rails. So seams you don't worry about the individual 12V lines but more there combined amp's.
also here is the side of the ocz PSU pic. It shows what each rail is meant for. So again I think the Amp number given by video card manufactures is more specific to the combined current of the PSU and not the amp's per rail. but agian I still can't find info that says this, just concluding from what I find here.

Planning for the future man. Getting the system most likely after the next paycheck's so almost a month off at best. But this is more for future planning. I still have not figure out which card I relay want, but having one that is made for the next games that well come out is more future planning then anything. We will have to go vista some time right. But also just more power man lol. My current pc is 4 years old and because I over engendered it, its still playing games that have just come out like supreme commander. not well mind you but still playable. I like to build the pc so that 3 years down the road its finelay getting a bit sluggish for the times. You yourself even said in the future you may upgrade the video card even, so hey, I would be more interested in avoiding the step uf upgrading. But agian we will see, I still got to sit down and look at the video card numbers. Hell knowing my luck there is a shader model 4 card out now that well be required in a year.
But may do what you did buff even, have not decided as of yet. But even with what you did buff, still want to figure this power requirement crap out as I think we don't care how much per rail liek we where thinking. which also means we can most lieklay get a different power supply for Shoshana pc which could save some cash. All our assumptions where based on the power was per rail not the combined current of all rails including your own system.

Tho I believe I will go for a little more amps per rail such as the power supply Buff got his hands on but o well. i have an 8800gtx. my wife bought it for me for christmas...
i like it, but have not really had much opportunity to excercise it. i was a bit peeved that falcon 4 allied force did not run with it, same with eech... but the last patch fixed it fvor f4af...a workaround they say although all my other games except those 2 worked with the card.
