Wife's Interview from Bahrain
My wife was interviewed by a local news station (local to her home town) via satellite while they were in port in Bahrain on her current deployment.

Hey BH , That’s a nice site. And so are your friends sites. I “ just “ got my site online with the Time Warner cable company and plan on posting up them garden pictures I promised so long ago. It’s looking sweet. Time Warner give me only 10mb for a site so not much room for anything else but the pictures. Ill haft to work on it this week =]
We're in the pipe , five by five.
Wow your wife is a machinist mate third class. Cool, man I remember when I was doing quals for the George Washington and we did a shake down 2 week cruise and that was the first time two female enlisted personnel served aboard an aircraft carrier. I knew the two females who were on board they were from my sister squadron VAW-120. The squadron responsible for bringing all E-2C hawkeye crew (enlisted and officer) for all fleets up to speed and quallified for sea duty.
Wow now they are a dime a dozen, I wondering if females are still getting pregnant right before deployments to get shore duty and miss that tour (yes that was a constant problem when I was in, a female actually asked me if I could get her pregnant and I said don't call me write me and if you see me walking down the street cross over to the other side), or did the Navy change the rules to reflect some kind of deterent or punishment for that. Prime example the Canapuss destroyer/submarine tender, crew compliment was 55% female 45% male. Of that 55% almost 30% turned up pregnant before she was due to return to her home port of call Madrid Spain (she was here for her five year overhaul).
Can your wife come by my house and install some hydraulics in my Honda Accord . LoL.

Well, in engineering they are still not a dime a dozen... they were kind of amazed at not only the fact that my wife got through the class, but how well she did in her A school as well. Don't let her small size fool you, she is both very tough and smart. She might deny it, but it's true.
Yes they still do that whole get pregnant thing to miss deployment. First time OK, maybe it was a coincidence, second time they get the boot. It's not tolerated. But I can't get my wife pregnant. I got hacked up so my wife could come off the birth control. I was gonna try to do it myself, but she made me go see the doctors...
Where do you live, I can ask her...

That was a joke man...but she could do that for a living when she gets out or hell get a job with an airline working on aircraft hydraulics, that would be cool and alot of money. I'm sure the switch over would be minor, just different schools of thought.

It's funny you mention that, I think she has been talking to some of the aircraft mechanics taking care of the aircraft on her ship. (She's on an amphib, so...)
She actually mentioned the possibility of re enlisting in the Marines or the Air Force and working on aircraft hydraulics. Her rationale was less deployment time than the Navy, but sadly it would probably mean more. Critical MOS's like certain ones taking care of aircraft do nothing but deploy in revolving door style. I'd never see her. Not to mention if she joined the Marine Corps she'd start over as an E-2 and have to go through boot camp all over again. I know she could handle it. But why. And then she'd be where she is now, just on the MEU rather than the Battle Group. Same thing, same place, just a different name, for a different branch. It's bad enough I'm looking at hte possibility of a recall the 2nd or 3rd year I'm out, before my 8 is up. Guess what supply does; perimeter security, and convoys... I mean sure, some of them barely know a war is going on; the other half are getting blown up though.
She could do so many other things at this point and make so much more money. And we might see each other more than 3 months a year even without the news interviews from around the world...
Great job for the single. Not so much for the married. I already told her, if I were single, I'd probaby reenlist. I hate the job, but no more than any other job I've had. And with this one, you get a certain unbeatable pride for doing...

Her best bet is to stay in the Navy and cross rate to Aviation Structual mechanics Hydraulics, and try her best to get into a E-2C Hawkeye squadron. She can keep her Rank she probably would have to go back to A school but the hawkeye's have the largest hydraulic system in the fleet (they have to because the wings are folded and unfolded via hydraulic pumps and the wings are 81 feet from tip to tip). If I remember correctly the main hydraulic pump sits in the tail end along with the hydraulic resevoir which needs 100 gallons not including whats pumping thru the system.
Also she will be on sea duty but spend most of her time doing work-ups and such like she's on shore duty. The average rotation back in the early 90's was about 2 to three years between cruises (CAG-7 was extended due to the fact that we were transistioned from the IKE to the Washington which just finished its extensive Sea Qualls for new ships introduced to the fleet), standard SOP for a new Carrier is about 3 to 4 years before she commits to her first cruise. Number one reason is they have to build a fleet around her with whats available and a very close second even though she passed her sea qualls she still has to be prepared to receive a CAG and the CAG has to be seamlessly introduced into the fold of the carrier. It sounds simple but believe you me it isn't.
Trust me tell her to stay in the Navy come over to the dark side (Brown Shoe Navy) and enjoy the ride.
