My computer is down

Not sure what happened, but I went to use my computer yesterday and it was powered off (I usually leave it on). I think the PS died sometime yesterday. At first I thought maybe the circuit breaker between my computer and the wall may have tripped, but that wasn't the case. I plugged the PC into it's own wall jack and no power, no nothing. I'm hoping it's something as simple as the PS.

I have been having some freezing up issues during the last couple of weeks, so maybe that was my PS telling me that it was dying. Hopefully I can find a SLI PS somewhere in town today, I would hate to have to order one and wait a few days to get here.

It figures, I'm out of school for the week and no computer to start off the week. Lol.

A simple test will answer that question for you. Plug into the wall jack, then check your mother board for a green light or amber light if no light then you will need a network cable and a router or switch (usually your cable modem or the such) if you still don't get a light then its your PS, if you get a light then you need to look at your on off switch your connections and then start with your mother board then other components in your PC.

Not sure if my MB has a light on-board, but I can tell you there is no light "ON" right now. One thing I learned in my Intro to PC class, 99% of the time when a computer won't start up, it's the power supply.

I had a power supply that died on me about 4 years ago and a couple of weeks before it totally died I noticed that my PC would shut down whenever I tried to play a game. If I just browsed the web and stayed in Windows, it was fine though. It seems that the extra power requirement of a 3d game stressed the weakened power supply too much and caused the pc to shut down.

I also dont leave my PC on for an extended amount of time if I'm not using it. I always shut it down if I wont be back within 2 hours.

Softball, any motherboard within past few years will have a led unless its some CHEEP knockoff one so betting no light new power supply.

Well you have your answer, and in the olden days of PC repair when PS's were worth their salt we found that the problem usually happened at the MB or the memory or the processor. At first you would miss the tell tell sign that the PS was working but after about five or six of the same problem we looked elsewhere first. A cheap PS usually worked for a long time back in the day and was mad reliable but now adays it seems they want you to upgrade to their more powerful models to get more money out of ya.

Could be your CPU. Remember I was having thermal issues and my comp would just lock up? Well, turned out that the CPU burned out. I would get lights on the mobo, but the CPU was nonresponsive. So, I guess the guys are right, no lights = dead PS. Still, it would suck if you plugged your new PS in to find that the CPU is actually the culprit. Oh yeah, I spent all last Christmas break with this problem, so I know how you feel about losing your comp on vacation. F'ng sucks. Hope you repair quickly and easily.

well if there where lights then its 2 big thigns, one is the motherbord and one is cpu. Hard to tel which one tho. Video card or ram it would still power up a little bit atleast

I'm 99% sure it's the PS. When I push the power button, I get nothing. No fans, no lights, no noise. The PS is DOA.

BTW, I picked up a new PS at Fry's Electronics. 750W CoolerMaster. I'm now $169.99 + tax short in my savings account. Lol. I will install it tonight.

Gator, I have a softball playoff game tonight at 6:20pm, so I most likely won't be on tonight until at least 7:30pm PST. Then, I have to swap out my old PS.

Got it up and running, it was the PS. I already notice the difference with this new PS. The computer boots up WAY faster than before, so I'm guessing that my old PS (625W) was losing power, especially after I got my 8800GTX video card.

And Grifter, I am running an 8800GTX and an AMD Dual Core CPU(2.4G), and 1TB of HDs (4 x 250G). Lots of power required for this computer, and it's over 1 1/2 years old.

The good thing is that it was the PS, and nothing else. Easy fix.
