I think "The Golden Compass" bombed for two reasons.
1. The negative publicity it got where both the author of the book and the movie were accused of being anti-Christian.
2. The story really was overly complicated for most kids in my honest opinion.

I saw the movie with two of my young cousins (both under the age of 10). I myself enjoyed the movie quite a bit but both of them kept fidgeting around after about an hour and after the movie was over one of them asked me what the story was all about but that she felt the big polar bear with the armor was "cool".
