One posssible purchase I may make before the end of the summer is a laptop. Do any of you own one? Out of curiousity, what would you recommend?

I have an Asus G1 B2. I like it, it will play anything I throw at it but battery life sucks (this is true with all lappers) when in high rez gaming mode or high rez dvd watching. Also the built in speakers are horrific, but I have head phones.

This might be over kill for what your looking for....but you asked

nice one. Yeah I would love to own that but it is overkill. I'm really working for a true workstation for the living room. It wouldn't be for high-end gaming, although I might play my dosbox and emulated stuff on it.

Edit: anyone else got a suggestion? I was thinking of something along these lines:

ok before asking that question I need info

what screen size do you want and what do you want to do with it, web serf, game ????.

Myself and Hondo have HP laptops with a 17" screen, mine is a dv8000t whle his is the newer dv9000t, same line basiclay. And the thing is extreamly good toy playes games. but its a BIg laptop generaly considered a Desktop replacment laptop which even has a full keyboard including keypad.

General laptop screen size is 15" which is a lot more portable. bt then do you want to game if yes then you need a decent video card in it, mine hs a nvidia 7600 go in it, hondo has but faster in his if I remember right. but if no gaming needed then just a generic video card will do.

Personlay I am liking the HP, Dell laptops well I got 1 friend that literaly the only original part on the dell laptoop is the frame, everything has been replaced.

Asus make good stuff, my sister also has a aser which seams nice. Tosheba is another great name, sony are good but WAY overpriced.

Veg, this is what I wrote above. So yeah, a 15" would be fine and no I'm not looking to do high-end gaming on it.

ya I started my post then had to look away for a bit so that was not here when I posted lol.

So biggest issues should be hard drive, ram and a credable cpu, don't worry at all about video cards.

I would stay in the Acer/Asus/HP/tosheba brands, they seam to always be good.

check NewEgg....even if you buy from someplace else...its a good spot to view specs etc...

I use NewEgg for about all of my hardware shopping, my last 3 PC builds have come from there

Thanks Veg. I'll give that some thought. Still too steep a price though. Maybe I will wait a year and get the monitor after all.

well the one buff posted is a 17" monitor

how much you looking to spend as a decent laptop can be had for the 500$ price range. My sisters was in the 5004 range with 2 gigs ram and such

I would say since it will be vista based you want 2 gigs ram and try and get atleast 120 gig hard drive in it. Procesor will end up in the 1.5 to 2 gig duo core range would be a decent for your needs.

Yeah, that's mainly what I've been looking at. About 500 or so. See:

http://shopper.cnet.com/notebooks/compa ... tag=rev#p5

Only problem is it only has one gig of ram. Would like more. Actually not that concerned abotu the HD. But 500 bucks is my range I think. I went to the gym and the more I think about this the more I realize it can wait a year or two longer. It's not absolutely essential while the monitor is growing more and more essential, believe it or not. Still, doesn't hurt to shop around and get a feel for the market. I always appreciate the insight of the folks here. You guys have never really steered me wrong. I still one the best purchases I've made was on Steel's recommendation: Seagate PSU. I love it.

well I would be a stickler on the 2 gig ram spot, that would be the basses of any system. Mostly because vista on 1 gig of ram = go get a coffee while notepad opens idea.

Worst thing is even if you get a 500$ laptop, look around for deals and you will get one,, you still need a laptop bag and such, toss in taxes if you buy at best buy or similar. and in all honesty bestbuy laptop prices are good. then extended warranty if you decide t get it, on a laptop its not a bad idea t be honest, laptops are the ONLY thing I have ever payed for extended warranties on.

yeah I'm gonna go ahead and turn my attention to the monitor. Just not ready to buy the laptop yet. Guess, I'll still have to tab grades in the office. Oh well.
