I say no because the amount of data upload and download during online gaming is minimal compared to the amount of data when you download large video and audio files. I know for a fact that most games I play online only involve a minimal amount of download and upload data that probably amounts to a few MB.

From that article it seems to me that Time Warner is going after those heavy users who download an excessive amount of video (probably complete movies) files.

where it will be an impact is when games release huge patches or demos .... where you've already paid for a game, are you going to want to pay for the bandwidth to patch it? Panzer is correct ... the amount of net traffic during gameplay is small -- it's the other things we use the net for that would be impacted. Think video-streaming and music (legitimate) downloads.

Sometimes I'd like to be able to see a meter (like we have for electricity) so that I can see if there's a network leak or someone trying to leach my wireless.

well caps just hit up here in Canada. Think under current plan my house will get about 60 gigs. Next plan will be no gigs a month. with at least 5 pc's in my house ya thats not going to work. Now what you may be able to do is check into a business line, as here business lines are 10$ more then I am paying now and uncapped but little less speed. O and dedicated ip.

Not sure how up to date the article is. At the end they list Bend Cable as having had a multiteir. However, they are Bendbroadband and I just left them because they were starting this. Their basic plan was only going to allow 10gb per month of upload/download on the internet. They were really trying to put a positive spin on this bull. They put a tool on their website to show how much internet usage you would use. Which I play online, my son plays online, and my daughter is constantly online. I found I was using about 11gb per month. This was going to force me to go to a higher tier if I didn't want to pay the extra per month. That was with just average usage going on. However, like Gator said if there were large downloads or something I'd be in even worse scenario. So, I left them and went to another provider. Just a way for them to either make more money. BTW the largest package was 30gb. So effectively they raised my rates by doing this.

Just went and checked their web site. Guess they must have caught a lot of hell and lost more than just me they did change it before they even got it up and going. Hehe. Oh well, they have other major problems also. Don't miss them in the least. But sad, announce something and don't even get it rolling before they change it.

I think the article said something like 5% of their users were consuming more than half of their network capacity. I don't know about you, but I don't want to pay for their abuse of the network (either with my fees or them slowing my network down). I would hope they could come up with a way to make those abusers pay for their usage without pissing off the 95% who are "normal" users. As was said before, I don't think even the worst of us gamers are that 5%.

Sounds fishy to me. Seems like most of those 5% are probably people downloading warez, bootleg copies of movies and/or lots of pron. :-)

The problem with this is it is just thinking 1 person on the net for general surfing. 40 Gigs ya more then enough. But it more or less screws gamers, IT people (monitoring servers form home all weekend long 24-7), People using internet for LEGAL movies, large house holds with several pc's. Like I said they have this crap going on here. Comcast has thought about this recentlay but they are looking at a 250 gig cap which is much more resenable while rogers up in canada has several tears the 50$ one gives 60 gigs next one is 90 gigs. now note when you hit the gig number you just have to pay per extra gig you download. On rogers I know its 1.25$ per gig over the 90 gigs ont here extreme package (on lower packages its more). They also state here they will only charge to a specific point, not sure that means stopping service of saying here is free pass for rest of the month we got enough of your cash for now.

Yeah. I d/l streams of Bab 5 via Hulu and download iTunes and such. I d/l quite a bit and would probably be in that 5% even though I'm not doing anything illegal. I don't want to have to pay extra, that's bull.

You can get each season of Babylon 5 for $20 now so it may be cheaper to go that route. :-)

Grif - even so, you're still probably not that 5%. Try to imagine how much bandwidth capacity 50% of Time-Warner really is. You might be above the average, but you're not likely in the top 5%.

you miss the point, this basically screws real internet users who want to use the net for what it is advertised for. IE a way if getting content like movies and music (assume all legal here), streaming videos, youtube and such. You can kill a cap by yourself with a cap. I will be looking into a business line here REAL soon I be thinking as I have a cap on my Canadian internet already. 60 gigs is cap higher personal plan is 95 gigs. Um where is the unlimited plan ??? come one right.

I would be most interested to find out how much bandwidth I use on a monthly basis. Besides online gaming and the occassional demo or patch download, the only other thing I do is watch the streaming BSG epsiodes from Sci-Fi.com but that's only once a week while the show is currently airing on tv.

Holy Cr*p thanks Panz you just reminded me the next episode of BSG was on ealier tonigh and i just gotta see what happens next just as well i have series link on my sattalite box recorder.
