Knock, knock. Who's there? Your Hard drive failing.

I screwed up. I said SATA and the HD is actually IDE. Can my mobo handle a SATA? How would I know? I doubt it can. In which case, what would be a comparable IDE HD to get? Do they sell a 32MB 500 GB HD in IDE?

its 500 gig drive but 16mb cache. Sorry no 32 I could see. As for if the motherbord can take sata, how old is the darn thing, and do you know what one it is ??. My last pc was 5 years old and change and it was one of the first mb's in there to do sata drives.

Found the manual for the mobo. It supports SATA. The manual reads, "The mainboard provides dual high speed Serial ATA interface ports. The ports support 1st generation Serial ATA data rates of 150 MB/s and are fully compliant with serial ATA 1.0 specifications." I bought the first Seagate 7200.11 500GB 32MB cache that Veg listed on this thread. Will it work with my mobo and will it work well? Obviously I can go buy a SATA cable if that's the case. Please respond at your earliest and let me know. I appreciate the help!

it will work, hell if i was in the Us still I would send u 2 free SATA cables I got lots but corssing border they will be a pain. I would not pay more the 10$ for a cable
It should work no issues then, I am thinking that the speed is slower then the max of the drive but hey cache will help even more in that case to be honest. So ya should not be a issue.

You will know the difference when you see the cables for SATA. They are much smaller and easier to deal with than the older IDE cables. They only go on one way, so there's no way you can screw it up when plugging them in.

On a side note, most SATA HDs today are SATA 2.0 or higher. You may need to set the jumper on the HD (Google it) to set it to SATA 1.0 in order to be compatible with your MB. Some HDs do this automatically, thus no need to set the jumper.

Um, you know you can log Sabre off and then log in with your own ID and password right Grif? ;-)Sabre wrote:I found some sata cables in my closet. Yes, I'm a packrat. So, I just need to find out if I need to use a jumper to get this work. We'll see.

Ok, I got the drive installed, but I've got a problem.
BIOS detects it as IDE Channel 2 Master not IDE Primary Master.
What do I need to do to get it detected as the primary master so that I can install the new OS on it? I haven't done this in a long time, and I've never done it with a SATA. Sigh. I have a feeling it would be easier if I had two sata drives. Any advice would be appreciated.

in all honesty my response has to be RTFM (Tead the Freaking Manual, can sub freaking for fracking or other similar words). I am surprised its showing up as IDe anyway as its clearly not ide. One thing would be try hooking the cable to the other SATA port on the pc, see if that makes the difference.
