Garmin vs tomtom and features

so for Christmas I said i want one thing, brother same thing we both want GPS units as hey you can load them with the tim hortons (main Canadian coffee shop locations) so you always know where to get a coffee lol. But besides that been all over canada with my new job IE Montreal, Vancouver, and different sites in Toronto and with my paintball some of the best places to play are 2 hrs from here in the middle of no ware idea. So figured handy toy to have so now I have to tell parents and such which one to get. Its going to be a group gift so all immediate family toss cash in for it instead of gettign 5 different things I never use.

So first off tomtom vs Garmin, I am leaning towards Garmin as they are into ALL things GPS Ie for air, sea, trails and automotive while tomtom is only automotive gps. Garmin a much bigger company basically and I hear good things about them. Now Tomtom an't be counted out as again lots of people sware by them, so not counting them out. So going to hit a best guy and spend time playing with them and see which interface I like the best but always want to see opinions

Also want to see what options people would say are must haves and just gimmics. For example something tells me blutooth so its a hands free device is not worth it as the speaker in my phone dose a good job so why bother paying 50$ more for it but then a device that has test to speach ie saying street name as well as turn right is better then just saying turn right in 50 meters.

So hey experences, features brand toss it out.

I have both a Garmin 250 and a Magellan 4040 GPS. Both work great, but the Magellan has a built in hands free Bluetooth for a cell phone. The Magellan is a refurbished model I got from Tiger Direct for $99, $150 cheaper than the Garmin when I bought it. Both GPSs work great for finding restaraunts and gas stations when travelling. Both are upgradable online, at a cost of course.

I've never used a Tom Tom before, so can't comment there. You should just look for the features you want it to have and go from there. Garmin GPSs have had great reviews when I was researching them, so that's a plus.

Also, my iPhone acts like a GPS without the voice directions. I can type in an address in Google maps, map it from my current location and it will show where I am in relation to the address with the distance shown.
