-------------------------------------------
SAN FRANCISCO--Today at a flashy media event in San Francisco, LucasArts and BioWare announced development of the PC massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic. Though ostensibly suspenseful, the unveiling's thunder was stolen this past July by John Riccitiello, CEO of BioWare parent Electronic Arts. Speaking to a business-oriented magazine, the executive casually confirmed that, yes, BioWare was working on a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Universe.

I'll say this much. If there is a free trial period I will give it a shot. If I like it a lot then I'll subscribe.

I want KOTOR III. I want a game I play when I want, for as much as I want, for one fixed price. I'm not going to play a game that costs me even if I don't play for a month.

I will never sign up for an MMO because I fundamentally disagree with the entire concept of how they're designed.

For $15 a month, the entertainment value is worth itIMO. It's only $.50 cents a day. Name one other form of entertainment that can offer that? Movies? DVDs? Those only offer 1 to 3 hours of entertainment, unless you watch them over and over. What fun is that?

Non-MMO MP games require that you have someone else online for you to play with. With MMOs, you log in and there are hundreds or thousands of others to play with.

I'm sorry you feel $15 a month is too much $$ for entertainment value. I personally think it's worth it as long as I get the enjoyment out of it that I am looking for. If I know that I am not going to play for most of a month, I simply cancel my subscription and renew it the next time I want to play. I have been doing this with City of Heroes and other MMOs for the last 3 1/2 years. The main reason I play MMOs is for my enjoyment and the social aspect it provides.

I think it would be kind of fun to get together as a WOF group in an MMO. It's really too bad they don't have a try before you buy option, although some MMOs offer a 10 or 14 day free trial.

Oh well, you can't please everyone.

On a side note, XBox Live is $50 per year, that's like $4 a month. That's an even better entertainment value!

It took me some time to get over the monthly fee of an MMO, however, I had come to the same conclusion of 50 cents per day. Thinking of it that way, it's like wow, that's really not that expensive. Plus, several do content and updates at no extra charge, so that $15 per month is adding to the game I play.

Then you have the aspect that you can almost always find someone to play with since there always are others playing.

Therefore, once I reasoned it, I was able to get over my initial dislike of the MMO billing method.

I remember giving Star Wars Galaxies a try for a week and discovering that I found it to be incredibly dull. If this new KOTOR MMO gets the gameplay right then I may subscribe but only if they offer a free trial period.

In most MMOGs, the first 30 days are not billed, aka free. Although you do have to purchase the original software to install on your PC, so it's not really "free" per say.

Panzer, didn't you and Jedi used to play World War II online? Wasn't that a pay to play MMOG?

We both played it but Jedi quit when WWII switched over to pay-to-play. The first 4 months or so of WWII Online were free because the initial release of the game was botched beyond belief and the game was only about 50% complete. I was a paying subscriber to WWII Online for about 2 years until I cancelled. I just eventually got bored of the game.

Playing a pay to play MMO was my reward to myself for quitting smoking. I spent over $25 a week on cigarettes - compare that to $15 a month on an MMO and I figure I'm saving money by paying to play.

What's next, paying for quests? Or $5 per level of experience? Lol.

I can foresee a lot of problems with that system, I wish them luck.

I just read both articles and all I can say is "no thanks". I'll be passing on this one. I hate EA.

TACH Who is Ms. Purple and what is that saying from, man that is funny as hell especially since I do not know what it is from and I'm sure there is a whole scene waiting for me to laugh at it.

Frak you EA. I hope their pricing scheme causes the MMO to fantastically fail.

well, if it's free to play and you only pay for costume customization or special colored light sabers, it might not be so bad ...
