Stupid question:
Do modern laptops require a special version of Windows OS simply because they are, in fact, laptops, or can any PC version of Windows be loaded onto a laptop?
Hope the question makes sense. Got my laptop yesterday, I'm typing on it right now in fact, and I'm very pleased with it. However, I don't have a copy of Windows Vista OS as a backup in case something goes wrong down the road. I figure it would be wise to get a copy handy and I want to be sure I'm getting the right version. Thanks for clarifying. Much appreciated.

Your laptop should have come with a copy of whatever OS was preinstalled. The vendor may not provide an actual Microsoft CD, but they should provide a system restore disc or something that would include the Windows OS and all the vendor's apps and crap.Grifter wrote:Stupid question:

it is indeed your full OS plus all the apps and drivers for the laptop. you should definitely burn them BEFORE you have an issue with the machine. you should also have a product ID on a sticker - likely pn the bottom of the laptop. you will need that when reinstalling/restoring. note that when you do restore, everything on your hard drive is wiped out and the laptop will be asa it was when you picked it up at the store.

On my Dell laptop, there is a seperate partition setup for restoring to the factory install of Vista. I have done an OS factory restore once on my Dell XPS due to a driver issue that could not be fixed through other restore methods. It was pretty fast and painless to do, but having to reinstall my 3rd party apps was the only drawback.

well I used my xp standard cd to try and install on a laptop it did not work well, used the xp cd that came with the laptop (you can order it for 5$ or something since you have a licence) and it worked. It is suppose to work off a standard install but hey beating it was drivers that where needed some ware that where not on stock cd thats all. But when buying ask for the windows cd should be a 5-20$ charge, else call tosheba and get one as you should be able to get a copy as last ting u want is a restore disc. Takes 15 days tog et the crap out of laptops as they install so much crap/freeware/junkware.
Actually, I'd say I've got most of the crapware off my Lappy already. Spent most of last night doing, but it was well worth it. I'll definitely burn a restrore disc; thanks for clarifying Steel. I was really curious about that. Since it is the full OS, then I'll just burn and shelve the restore disc in case the laptop has a meltdown. You never know. If that doesn't work, I can always order one from Toshiba later. Thanks guys.
Grab a copy of Hiren's BootCD. There's a bunch of really indispensible utils on there.
