My mom has needed a car for a while now, the last one she destroyed (4 years, no oil change) so she has not had wheels in like 2 years. Its been a mess. So Because I pay a lot of her bills already, I told her if she wanted a car to save her money. She did and had $1000 for a "new" car.
a $1000 doesnt buy much these days. I looked and looked at cars the last few weeks. Nothing out there but ugly clunkers with no chance of being drivable in 6 months. Was not holding my breath.
Saw an add on the Wichita CraigsList for a 78 T-bird DJE, with 82k mileage yada yada. I called the guy, and last night went over to look at it. For a car almost as old as my brother....its in great shape. Needs a new gasket at the Y-collector on the right side exhaust manifold and a new heater core. It is pure late 70's cheese with crushed blue velor interior, a not kidding here...functional 8-track player, power everything and that 70's power steering that takes all the feel out of the road. Anyway he took $800 cash and I took the car home last night.
So sorry for missing IL2 last night

82K on a 30 year old car, nice find. Hopefully that $800 doesn't blossom into $8000 with repairs. Looks like a safe car to be in, in the event of an accident.
Paint it red leaving a white stripe down the sides, get her a flashing red beacon light, and she could pretend to be Starsky and Hutch. I know, that's not the car that they had, but it would still be cool.

well the heater core i can do myself, and thankfully I dont have to take the fender off to get to it. It will be a mess, but it is doable. The exhaust leak is an easy fix, and I just need to throw a rebuild kit on the carb and re-tune it and set the floats. Still cheaper than havign a new motor put in the old 86 Olds.
