A beautiful Sci-Fi movie

Post by Falker »

Silent Running is probably my all-time favorite film. Its central theme is that man, even at the risk of madness, must be his own savior. Bruce Dern stars as Freeman Lowell, adrift in the spaceship "Valley Forge", part of a fleet of ships housing domes which are in essence a Garden of Eden. Each ship has attached a number of huge domes with sophisticated greenhouses. These were intended to refurbish an Earth devastated by nuclear war. Lowell is in constant disagreement with his three fellow crewmembers - they simply don't care about the domes, or share any of his ideology. It is left to Lowell to care for the plants, helped by the three small drones Huey, Dewey and Louie. Then an order is received from Earth - destroy the domes and return. This is the turning point of the film - Lowell must stand up for what he believes is right.

Well , some people might think so. I think I may like it because having robot friends seems appealing to me. That and I can understand why he wanted to save the forest , but what I don’t understand is why no one else wanted too. He must have truly found happiness in his life and that’s a rare thing for some people. Planting and watching things grow takes time. Creating life and enjoying the life you created can make a person feel wholesome.

It seems like not allot of people out there realize just how precious life is and they take it for granted. Such was not in this case with Freeman Lowell. I’ve always felt like him , being an outsider who don’t mesh well with other people. Like him , I revert to other avenues and try to find my own bliss

Towards the end he misses he friends , the life he once had and knowing his life is not as important as the forest , he decides to leave Dewey there to take care of it. He launches the forest dome into deep outer space before blowing up his own ship. I always wandered how far the robot and the forest made it after that. I would like to think that the forest went on for several decades before extraterrestrial life which does not originate from Earth ; found the forest and helped Dewey take care of it too.

Wow. It's ben a long, long time since I've seen this film. I happen to like it a great deal as well. I saw back in the early 80s when I was just a kid. I remember the droids having to operate on protagonist. He was somehow injured.

Silent Running is a very good film but I haven't seen it in probably 15 years. I definitely need to revisit it.
