The 1982 one is actually closer to the story upon which both are based, that being 'Who Goes There?' by John W. Campbell, but the best of those old 50s sci fi movies - and this one, directed by Howard Hawks, is definitely one of the best - have a charm and magic that's hard to beat.

I beg to differ sir. I believe that Moonraker “ is “ classified as a science fiction film because it was nominated for several Saturn Awards in 1980. Altthough I guess I was borderline on Live And Let Die so.... I wont count that one. : )

Moonraker
Aside from being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, the film, given its unusual attention to the science fiction genre than the average James Bond film, received attention from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films and was nominated for several Saturn Awards in 1980. The nominees were for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Special Effects, and Best Supporting Actor (Richard Kiel). The DVD of the film was later nominated in 2004 for the Golden Satellite Award Best Classic DVD Release. Moonraker won the Golden Screen Award in Germany in 1980.

Robert Vaughn was in this one. I always liked him after this film. He mostly wore black back in them days. George Peppard also takes a part in this one. They were someone to admire when I was younger.

"The Thing" is John Carpenter's best film IMHO and also one of the best remakes ever.Hudson wrote:I will grant you that, but the macabre humor of the Norris Spider scene in the '82 version is to die for. The whole movie is really awesome.

Panzer, have you seen Dark Star?
Re: John Carpenter (from wikipedia) --
His first major film as director, Dark Star (1974), was a sci-fi black comedy that he cowrote with Dan O'Bannon (who later went on to write Alien, borrowing freely from much of Dark Star). The film reportedly cost only $60,000 and was difficult to make as both Carpenter and O'Bannon completed the film by multitasking, with Carpenter doing the musical score as well as the writing, producing and directing, while O'Bannon acted in the film and did the special effects (which caught the attention of George Lucas who hired him to do work on the special effects for Star Wars). Carpenter's efforts did not go unnoticed as much of Hollywood marveled at his filmmaking abilities within the confines of a shoestring budget.
