The Les Paul Standard (1958-1960) is pretty much the foundation of rock and roll as we know it today. These guitars were not big sellers when they were new and were eventually discontinued/replaced by what would become the Gibson SG. But in the late 60s and early 70s blues and rock guitarists (including Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin) rediscovered the Les Paul Standard - and boom, demand for these guitars went through the proverbial roof. Nowadays, a vintage Les Paul in good condition can bring hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I've owned fifteen Les Paul guitars in the past thirty-three years, and currently have seven. I don't have any of the 'Great Old Ones' though. Closest I'll ever get are my '58 and '60 Historic Reissues with Brazilian rosewood fretboards.
Sad to see Mr. Polsfuss go.
