Champions Online free weekend

Post by Tach Deneva »

Try it for free. I decided to give it a shot. Not overly impressed so far, especially with movement, but that's partly because I haven't yet found a way to set it up so that I can use the same keys I use in CoH and GW for movement (and get the same result).

Anyway - it's a free weekend. 2.5 or so gig download. Whee.

Okay, I got the movement thing the way I want it. But whoopee, the mission that takes you out of the tutorial is BUGGED. Evidently it's a pretty common bug. An NPC you need to open a door for you gets stuck in a doorway and just kinda hangs there. The only solution I found, on the CO forums: log out for 20 minutes. Or longer.

Brilliant.

Well, yesterday I was ready to write it off, but I decided to keep going a while longer. Started a second character - a melee type with super strength. The tutorial seemed a lot less chaotic the second time through and I found some missions I missed the first time.

As of this morning I've got my force 'blaster' to 10 and my melee strong dude to 7. So far I've fought lots of irradiated mutants and some cowboy ghosts in the American Southwest and Canada. The game is actually starting to get fun now that I'm more familiar with the controls/GUI.

One of the cool things I've run across - Millenium City seems HUGE and so far I've seen no 'war walls'. Oh, and I saw a guy whose toon actually LOOKED like a giant chicken: claws, beak, feathers, wings, and all.

I damn near bought it on Steam when I saw it for $19.99. I could not find it on the list for that price anymore, so I didn't get it. I used to play Champions growing up, so I have been somewhat interested in trying it.

A giant chicken costume? LMAO!

Critter won SECOND PLACE in a costume contest last night - 10K of whatever the heck the CO version of 'money' is. Which is a lot. I think. I dunno. Anyway, 2nd place, woo hoo.

You can't see it in the pic, but he is always in a crouching stance and mostly runs on all fours, and he is very small.

But he is VERY STRONG.

Here he is with a fan: Whee.

They don't seem to have different servers, at least not so you'd notice. It's like Guild Wars, where there are several zones depending on the number of players.

Ah ok. Hopefully I can get it installed this weekend, and then I should have time to play it over the holidays.
