Have you tried plugging into the rear USB port and not the front (Assuming that is what you are doing)? I have had experience with USB devices requiring more power and the front USB ports, for whatever reason, did not have enough power, or something to that effect. Once I plugged into the rear USB ports, the device worked as it should. Worth trying anyway.

I think the cables they make on the cases are total crap. I have the same issue; anything without separate power that draws too much just starts going flaky.
