LOMAC thread

Post by Madrus »

Until we get another LOMAC forum, I thought I would start one dedicated to initial impressions, installation issues, etc.

I've got to tell you I was very skeptical of how good this sim was going to be and my initial impressions were mixed. I liked several things about the sim, but was initially frustrated by Cougar control issues, plus one CTD/reboot, and difficulty in actually having success in the missions.

But after a few hours of working through programming my Cougar and exploring the various keyboard commands - I like this sim a lot. Some of the best features:

1. A zoom function in the pit. Zooming in and out really helps.
2. HUD only view - again, really helps me out a lot.
3. Autopilot, alt and speed hold.
4. Views to follow your missile in to the target so you can really enjoy the hit.
5. In some respects, this sim appears to be similar in several ways to USAF, but with vastly improved flight models. The terrain and 3d modeling of the planes is quite similar between the two sims. The simplified avionics make it easier to use your weapons than in Falcon 4 - which still sometimes baffle me after almost two years.
6. I am looking forward to the MP and the ability to jump in different planes in your flight. I don't like the one plane only aspect of IL2 or FB. Yeah, I know it isn't realistic, but screwing up your takeoff or mission in IL2 means you just sit there or force the host to restart.

well I've been busting my head with the demo and I am impressed with the ease of control and such, but in the options window when I changed from keyboard to my flight stick, just basic functions like thrust that I couldn't change or when I did make a change it would always default back to keyboard command. Now I don't have the game so I'm assuming that you can change within the game with the full version. Plus that readme file they gave with the demo, come on now WHY WHY WHY! Is this what I have to look forward to or am I making a ASS out of myself in assuming there isn't more.

1. I had a problem with the thrust axis as well. Follow these steps and pray:
a. Options
b. Input
c. Select your device. Your stick should be listed in the drop down menu
d. Select axes
e. Under actions, next to the thrust setting, it should say Axis2. If it does not then click on change. a window will come up and ask you to select device axis. select axis2 and click on ok.
f. click on test. you should see your throttle working now.
g. ok.

2. it should not change. but there are reports on the forum that indicate you are not alone in changes not saving. I have not had that problem.

3. What's this about the readme? Why what? do you want a bigger readme? what are you assuming about the readme?

Just a hint. After you add your name to the list of pilots, make yourself the default pilot by checking the yellow box. Then you will appear in the logbook and your missions will be recorded.

Also, make sure you program your stick for center view or remember KP5. That one keystroke has saved my life so many times as I was panning for my target and losing sight of where the plane was going. Bingo, instant view forward.

The demo has been a blast- runs great on my new computer, and I think I'll be getting the full game for Christmas. Looking forward to a MP game sometime soon.

Hurry up guys. Raptor & I had our first MP game tonight, and we had a great time. The only problems we had were normal first time problems - figuring out the network connection screens.

You guys are going to love flying this.

Found and interesting post about thrust and yaw problems in the LOMAC forums.

So for all you guys that are having yaw problems with your stick and i know Raptor is having this problem, (but he always has a problem with his stick), here is what was said about the problem and a possible fix and it's an in game fix not a stick programing error.

"The left drift issue is because you only have one engine burning. You have to go into the games option section and clear out the radial that is on that other engine. It's been that way in every build."

Hope that helps a few people out as it appears LOMAC is set with the ability to recieve inputs for Left and Right engines as default and unless you change this you will be running on partial power on one engine.

If this does not fix the problem then sorry, just trying to help.

This very well might be causing the problem that Raptor is experiencing, but I have no clue as to what the guy means by "You have to go into the games option section and clear out the radial that is on that other engine. It's been that way in every build."

When you go into the options - input section and then pull down the dropdown menu under controllers to select your stick, you get a page that has a place to test your stick inputs. on the left you make sure what axes are assigned to which stick functions (axis2 is assigned to thrust for my Cougar). Then you go to the bottom right and there is a test function that lets you see a graphic representation of your inputs (like Falcon 4, et al) as you are moving your stick. there are two columns for thrust - left and right engines. when i move my cougar throttle, both columns move simultaneously. and since i did not do anything to assign left and right or combine them, i assume that both engines are the default. what does this guy mean by "clear out the radial?"

I would also check, and i am sure Raptor did this, by going in to exterior view and looking at his engines.

when you install the demo, there is a read me file that you have the option of opening. Well that one and a fourth page readme file explains how to fly the air to ground quick mission for the A-10 and a short air to air engagement with the MIG-29 against a mirage 2000 I am guessing or maybe a euro fighter. IMHO that readme file is nowhere near enough to explain the avionics, targeting and such. I don't see anyting different in activate guns from Janes F-18 you have to select them also so that isn't much of a difference for me. I do like the battle damage, I was trying to take out that Mirage 2000 or Eurofighter(aren't they one in the same) and he clipped me with what looked like a heatseeker and my left wing just came right off and there I was plunging towards water so I just ejected and enjoyed the ride down. Whats really cool is when you take a couple of rounds to your wing and you start leaking fuel. I started thinking where is the nearest airfield when all of a sudden I am informed that I have only 1500 lbs. of fuel left. Scary!

No, the Eurofighter Typhoon & the Mirage 2000 are not the same aircraft - the Typhoon is at least two generations ahead. It is an absolutely lethal dogfighting platform, bettered only by the F-22 Raptor and possibly the SU-47 Berkut, it also has a massive ground-pounding capability. The F-35 is fairly close, but I put the Typhoon ahead on variety of stores carried, quantity, and it's dogfighting capability, although the F-35 is considered a next generation aircraft in comparison. The information, although some may think otherwise, about the Typhoon is very limited - I say that sort of thing tells it's own story.

Hey, DA, you must have a different version of Jane's F/A-18 than I do, because I NEVER have to activate guns. Just takeoff so the squat switch doesn't deactivate your weapons and pull the trigger - guns will fire. No other switching is necessary. Try that in LOMAC - your guns WILL NOT fire. You have to activate them first by pressing "c." Then your trigger will fire the guns. And while your guns are active, I don't think you can pickle anything else.

IMHO a readme file for a demo is not supposed to act as a manual for the game, a tutorial for training, or a briefing for a mission. You usually get some basic idea of the game, graphics settings, installation issues, hardware issues, etc. I think you just expected too much. The .pdf manual that comes with the game should satisfy you, and if not, the extended manual which will be bound may be what you are looking for.

Your right I'm sorry you can fire the gun and also pickle all other ordance but you can't see the ammo count for the gun, you had to pickle with another joystick button which for me was two since it sits where my HAT would have been if I spent the money like that. So yes I was wrong.

Madrus andRaptoe and anyone else that has Yaw problems if you are OL tonight i will talk you both through it as i have read more info on this problem and seen the screen shots for the game options screen and what needs to be done, so ithink i will be able to sort this out tongith for Raptor and explain it to anyone that need the info or would just like to know just in case the problem cropped up in the future, it's a real easy fix.

One thing i found and i found it slightly disturbing but it might not be that big a deal is that someone mentioned that even after fixing this problem, LOMAC's Flight models demand that all flyable aircraft will need trimming adjustments during flight for different speeds and so on so you might find that at one speed everything is fine but accelerate or slow down and the aircraft will need trimmed to keep it straight and level with out fighting the stick.

I realise this is more like an added realism thing as real planes will need trimming during flight depending on load, speed and altitide and it might only be small tweaking during flight that is needed if so great, as this will give a bit more realism in there, but if it turns out to be something you need to be doing every minute it could be a serious distraction from the enjoyment of the game, i'm guessing it's the former as i dont have the game yet to see for myself but i'm sure you guys with LOMAC already can let me know, roll on Xmas and that new Video Card.

i have trim controls programmed in my stick, but i rarely have to use them. Maybe once on a long flight. It does not seem to be intrusive as you can easily keep on flying without the trim. it does seem to vary with the type of plane, plus fuel burn, loadout, and altitude.

Glad you mentioned it; it seems that no other sim models flight this accurately. it's kind of cool when you think about it. I also think it is cool when you approach the stall speed, the shaking and sluggishness appears. and when you fly by another plane extremely close you get in his jetwash also and the plane shakes.

Hey guys,

Been trying to learn this game, tough for a non-flight sim guy. Controls are overwelming. I'm on call this weekend so I'd love to try and get a few flights in and learn from you guys as well. I was thinking of springing for a Saitek X45, anyone use this unit? Any good?

They are pretty decent actually...and finally have decent support for XP.
I have one, but opted to get a used set of older Thrustmaster gear because I wanted rudder pedals...and then upgraded it with digital chips. As far as I know you still can not use rudder pedals with the X45 unless you jump though hoops. Someone else may have newer info on that - if in fact you do want rudder pedals (the X45 has a rocker on the throttle to simulate rudder pedals).

And stick with it... It is worth the learning curve. There is nothing like going up with your buddies and conducting a full blown mission with ground attack and escorts...or going head to head with a group on each side (hopefully LOMAC is capable of both).

It does allow coop and adversarial. Unfortunately, no campaigns in coop just missions. :( Well, at least they included coop.
