I haven't looked too closely at the Alternate Advancement stuff as I was under the impression that you couldn't do anything with it until level 80, but it seems I was mistaken:
"The alternate advancement system gives anyone from level 20 to 80 new ways of progressing or earning new combos, powers and abilities."

Guess I need to do some reading up as well.
Edit: Hah! Well, after checking my level 40 toon to see if I could do anything with the AA stuff, I'm at roughly 40,000 of 1,000,000 of having enough of the PVE side of it for ONE POINT, so...

Re: Age of Conan going F2P
Well, doggies. Hit 50 with my assassin last night, which gave me the option to start a new character at level 50. My intent had been to roll with a Bear Shaman, but after further contemplation I decided to delete my level 22 Dark Templar and recreate her as my new level 50 - and my new main. Here's hoping I don't regret this decision later.
Speaking of which, lemme tell ya - along about level 39 or so I was beginning to feel pretty darned sorry I'd chosen to stick with an assassin as my main character. My assassin has had tea and crumpets with ye Olde Grim Reaper again and again and again and again on her way to level 50. Pretty much every quest I've done since the upper 30s has resulted in tombstones littering the landscape. Often, just trying to get from one safe area in a zone to the next meant bloody death - and this is while sneaking around with maxed out Hide. AoC Assassins can dish out some serious DPS, yes indeed, which would be great if they could survive more than three or four hits due to armor that is about as effective as a wet corn flake. To add insult to injury, the game routinely throws three, four, five or more foes at you all at the same time. And if you do manage to survive a fight with three or more foes, all too often it's 'oh crap here comes another one!' while your character has only a tiny sliver of health left. Sometimes running away works. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the bad guys follow you - and keep up with you - until you're drained of stamina as well as health and woops, it's death by falling damage from a 5' drop and hello again, Grim Reaper, we have to stop meeting like this, people will talk. It's been years since I've been so frustrated by a game that I have actually YELLED at the screen and pounded my fist on my desk.
Now, I'm sure this is mostly just me not quite grasping the fundamentals of how the class works and making all sorts of noob blunders with feats and combos, and I'm sure there are people out there who can play AoC Assassins and have them be undying engines of death and destruction, but even so - egad. I didn't have anywhere near this amount of trouble figuring out how to play a LOTRO Burglar, and I can play a CoH Blaster in my sleep (and have done so on many occasions).
Anyway, so far this level 50 Dark Templar is doing okay. Only died once today. That's like, ya know, somewhere in the vicinity of 1000% improvement.

Sorry I haven't been online Tach, I've been hit with a lot of extra stuff at work. I've been getting home late (10 or 11pm) and I am so tired I just don't have the energy to get online. I'll try and get online at some point over the weekend, but I have a somewhat busy schedule. RL comes before games, but hey, what can I do?
Congrats on reaching level 50. I think with what you are describing, questing together in a group will have much more favorable results, especially with me being a healer. On my Bear Shaman, I can tank 3 or 4 mobs at a time, sometimes 5. If I hit the heals at the right time and get a critical hits in combat, I can mop up pretty well. I'm trying to plan out my Feats so as not to screw up my build, but there is a trainer that you can goto to fix your feats (at a cost). We'll see how it goes.

Re: Age of Conan going F2P
After some research on the AoC forums I did a 'respec' on my sin and also bought some better gear from the auction house. That helped a lot. Still fragile, but not quite as bad.
There's a level 40-80 'soloable' dungeon in Gates of Khitai that I've tried twice now to solo with my Sin - once at 40 and again at 51. I can get all the way to the end boss, but can't defeat him because first I have to go through three waves of attackers: one in the first wave, two in the second, and three in the third. Best I've been able to do so far is get to the third wave. There's maybe five seconds between waves, not really enough time to rest/heal. To make it even more fun, the boss is continually tossing out a massive damage/knockback AOE that will kill my Sin if it hits her twice. It will damage the attackers, too, but two hits won't kill them. There's a couple of seconds of advance warning before an AOE hits, which is good, because there's time to move, but as soon as one AOE finishes, another starts, which is bad because I have to keep my Sin moving pretty much constantly, which means I can't get off any combos, which means it takes longer to defeat the attackers, which means they get in more hits (especially if they have ranged attacks) which means DOOM!
Haven't tried it with my DT.

Behold! The interior of Bartholomo's house, a way out here beyond the outskirts of Tortage! Why, I bet one could jump off this rock and land inside and go out the front door - and be IN Tortage! Nanner nanner boo boo, silly gate guards!
