I just recently finished watching this film and I highly recommend it to any US Civil War buff. The total running time of the film is 3 hours and 40 minutes so it's quite an epic.

Stephen Lang's portrayal of Stonewall Jackson is terrific and I seriously need to read some books about him because my impression is that he was quite a complex character but I want to learn more about him. Not just his military prowess but also what made him "tick".

What I really appreciate about the film is that it doesn't "demonize" either side of the conflict and at least for me, I can fully understand the motives and reasonings behind why the key players (Lee, Jackson, Chamberlain, etc.) did what they did.

I've seen it and I would concur with your synopsis. It's a strong, and I consider it to be a fairly accurate portrayal, of those men and events. The movie draws it's sense of movement, it's pace, not so from the battles but from the exchanges between these men and the people in their lives. I also thought that acknowledging the Irish immigrants' involvement in the war to be an important aspect of this film. I was glad to see that they included it.

That was quite a poignant scene during the battle of Fredericksburg when you see a Union Irish regiment assaulting the position held by the Confederate Georgia Irish regiment.
