XP = X-tra Peculiar?

Post by Tach Deneva »

Well, heck, I took the plunge and installed Winders XP. I did what I thought was a clean install - not an upgrade. But the really weird thing is, nearly all my old WinME files are still there!

Which is good, because it was easy to import all my old OE email messages, accounts, and address book (which I of course had previously backed up to CD anyway).

Which is bad, because I wanted all the ME junk GONE. Hmmph. So I went on a mad deleting spree last night, and managed to not wreck anything (although I had to restore the Java folder to get the ELH intro page to work).

All in all, though, I'm not absolutely detesting XP, at least not yet. It's actually kinda like Linux... well, the same way a pigeon is kinda like an eagle. It hasn't crashed yet, which is quite nice. WinME just loved to crash. If ME didn't crash at least once a day, I felt like something was seriously wrong.

Blah blah, anyway, all the maps are still in my Mercs folder, so maybe I'll get lucky and won't have to reinstall them. I'm seriously considering NOT installing the mech packs, as I'd just as soon not have that C_Dilla crap back. But that would mean no Dragon. Grrr.

about the only realy possitive thing about winXP is that if a program crashes you can cntl+alt+del and open up the program manager and end the program there. then you can restart it and it dosnt take down your whole system. well most times anyhow. some programs are picky and you might have to reboot but most of the time you dont. and the compatability thing does work to some extent. its nice and flashy but i find that the plain old basic windows is the best. some older games and programs have a fit with the new flashy effects winxp has. umm..... lets see.... it generaly seems to be a ok OS for the most part. just keep in mind that there is alot of bloat ware attached to it and its alot larger install then winme or 98.

but remember, this is comen from a guy too dumb to figure out how to install unix. let alone USE it.

Ack, I had to use EnterNet 300 to connect so I could play Mercs online when I was running WinME. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with WinXP, and while I can connect to ZoneMatch, I can't join any games. My ISP's tech support gave me a 'bridged ethernet' setup which was supposed to be just like the connection I had with EnterNet 300 - but I still couldn't join any reindeer, er, Mercs games.

Anybody else using WinXP with an ADSL connection?

hmm winxp comes with a personel firewall. you might want to check and see if that is enabled. you do this by:

1 click start button
2 go up to 'settings'
3 click on 'network connections'
4 then right click on your network connection icon and select properties.
5 click the advanced tab and then check to see if the internet firewall box is checked.

i had this problem when i first installed XP could join crap! scared the hell out of me till i found this and de-selected the box and all was well from that point on. i hope its this!

Hmm, well, I had the firewall turned off for the bridged ethernet connection. Still couldn't join any games. I'll keep trying - there's GOT to be a way to get this crazy thing to work.

Whee, I got it working - I can join Mercs games now. Turns out it was in fact a firewall issue. I had previously set up a bridged ethernet connection with no firewall - but left the firewall ON for the Local Area Connection. I turned the firewall off for that, and that did the trick.

More X-Peculiarities tonight, in regard to Mercs.

Mercs would not even start for my 'Limited User' account in XP. It ran fine for my Admin account, but kept giving me a 'Spew' error when I tried to run it as a Limited User. I've never seen a 'Spew' error before. At least, not on a PC. Overindulgence in such things as tequila can cause spew AND errors, but that's another story.

Anyway, as it would not seem prudent to run XP as an Admin all the time, and the Limited User was too darn Limited, I set up a 'Power User' account, which seems to have solved the problem.

It only took 2 and a half hours of Googling to find out how to do it, as the elusive 'Power User' account is not even listed as an option in the XP User account settings. I would not have known it even existed if a friend hadn't mentioned it a few days ago. But it's there, and it seems to be working.

Some of the defaults that XP comes with are bizarre to say the least. One to look out for is the XP Firewall is on by default and thereby royally screws with other FW you may be using. Another fav of mine is the powering down of the modem as power saving feature!
